(1)   State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Malaysia

YANGON, 31 Aug - On the occasion of the anniversary of the National Day of Malaysia, which falls on 31 August 1998, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the U Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Majesty Tuanku Ja'afar Ibni AI-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia and His Excellency Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia.

(2)   Contract signed to lease Ywama Steel Mill to National Industrial Holdings Ltd

YANGON, 30 Aug - The No 3 Mining Enterprise of the Ministry of Mines and the National Industrial Holdings Ltd today signed the contract on the lease of Ywama Steel Mill.

The signing ceremony at Karaweik Hall, Kandawgyi, was attended by Secretary-1 of State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Ministers at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel and Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, acting Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye; Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, the Vice-Mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, Chairman of National Industrial Holdings Ltd U Htay Myint and directors, entrepreneurs and guests.

In his address, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint said the government is implementing four economic objectives and practicing market-oriented economic system.

He noted that there are opportunities to attract foreign investment and local entrepreneurs have more opportunities to invest in various undertakings for national economic development.

He spoke of the undertakings of the Ministry of Mines and the joint ventures with foreign companies and local entrepreneurial organizations in mineral resources exploration, production and development projects.

He said encouragement is being given to the private sector, which plays a crucial role for national economic development, and noted it is essential to privatize the State-owned enterprises.

He said that in keeping with the Senior General's guidance necessary tasks were carried out for the National Industrial Holdings Ltd, which would invest in manufacturing steel and other construction materials, to lease Ywama Steel Mill.

The minister noted that it was the first biggest privatized establishment and Urged the company and national entrepreneurs to work unitedly and seriously to run the mill in full capacity and boost production.

Acting Managing Directory of No 3 Mining Enterprise U Hsan Tun and Chairman of the National Industrial Holdings Ltd U Htay Myint also spoke.

Afterwards, U Hsan Tun and U Htay Myint signed the contract and exchanged documents.

Later, dinner was hosted to mark the contract-signing ceremony.

(3)   Women's and Men's Individual Elimination and Final Rounds of 1998 World Ranking Asia Archery Circuit First Round Competition

YANGON, 30 Aug - Women's and Men's Individual Elimination and Final Rounds of 1998 World Ranking Asia Archery Circuit First Round Competition continued at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this morning, attended by Patron of Organizing Committee for the 1998 World Ranking Asia Archery Circuit First Round Competition Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, Vice-President of the International Archery Federation President of International Archery Judges Association Mr Don Lovo, Vice-President of the Asian Archery Federation Mr Sanguan Kosavinta, President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe and EC members, guests, managers of the teams, coaches and sports fans.

Altogether 16 archers took part in women's event. In the finals, Ms Wang Dan of China-B won gold with 104 points and Ms Liupi Yu of Chinese-Taipei second.

Ms Lin' Sang of China-A beat Ms He Ying of China-A 112-106 and won bronze.

Sixteen archers participated in men's event. Mr Tang Hua of China-A and Mr Zhang Zheng of China-B were tied in the final with 110 points. Mr Tang Hua won gold with 10 points in penalty and Mr Zhang Zheng silver.

Mr Yang Bo of China-A beat Mr Wu Tsung-Yi of Chinese-Taipei-A 109-105 and won bronze.

The competition continues tomorrow.

(4)   Minister inspects natural gas test well No 9 in Indaing

YANGON, 30 Aug - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, together with Managing Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise U Kyaw Nyein and officials, visited Indaing natural gas field this afternoon.

The minister inspected natural gas test well No 9 which can produce about one and half million cubic feet a day, and gave instructions on filling the daily-produced natural gas into the natural gas pipeline network as soon as possible and drilling new test wells at the promising sites in Indaing area.

(5)   Culture Course for Women concludes

YANGON, 30 Aug - The Culture Course for Women co-sponsored by the Myanmar Theravada Buddhist Missionary Central Committee and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs concluded at Shweyinaye Thathana Beikman in Bahan Gyatawya Street, Bahan Township, today.

The concluding ceremony was attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, Vice-Chairperson of the National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr May May Yi, Head of Working Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation Dr Khin Win Shwe and members and course instructors, among others.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone delivered an address.

Ministers Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Aye, Director-General Col Sit Myaing, Dr Khin Win Shwe, Dr May May Yi and Daw Sein Sein presented certificates to the trainees.

Altogether 200 trainees attended the three-month course.

(6)   Chief Justice back from Malaysia

YANGON, 30 Aug - The delegation led by Chairman of National Convention Convening Work Committee Chief Justice U Aung Toe arrived back here from Malaysia by air this afternoon after attending the 19th ASEAN Parliamentary Work Committee and General Meeting.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Vice-Chairman Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Joint Secretary-2 of NCCC U Aung Nyunt, Supreme Court Justices, departmental officials and officials of Malaysian Embassy and families of delegation members.

Delegation members Joint Secretary of NCCWC U Thaung Nyunt, Secretary of Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Aye Maung, Director-General of Pyithu Hluttaw Office U Myo Nyant, Director-General of Cottage Industries Department Dr Than Htaik and Assistant Director U Tun Ohn of ASEAN Affairs Department also arrived back on the same flight.

(7)   UDE TV lectures

YANGON, 30 Aug - TV Myanmar will telecast lectures for first-year arts and law students and second-year law students of University of Distance Education for 1998-99 academic year from 6:10 pm to 6:40 pm on 4 September.

The lectures include history for the first-year students and Myanmarsar for second-year law students.

YANGON, 29 Aug - A ceremony to donate dry rations to Vijotayon Sarthintaik was held at the Kyauktaik in Mayangon Township this morning. Present were Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, senior military officers, departmental officials, guests and well-wishers.

(9)   New Giordano shop opens

YANGON, 30 Aug - A new Giordano shop opened at Saleroom No S-21, Yuzana Palaza, Tamway Township, this morning.

Present were members of the board of directors of Giordana Company Ltd and employees of the shop.

Director Daw Myint Myint Win of Giordano Company Ltd formally opened the shop.

There are now 16 Giordano outlets, which sell Hong Kong-made T-shirts, shirts, jeans, hats, shoes, belts and children's clothes.

(10) Myanmar equestrian team arrives back

YANGON, 30 Aug - Myanmar selected equestrian team arrived back here yesterday after attending horse racing and jockey course and races of Hong Kong Pony Club of Hong Kong Jockey Club.

They were welcomed back by President of Myanmar Equestrian Federation Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun and officials.

Altogether 170 trainees from the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Singapore Thailand attended course.

and the Myanmar team won two first prizes and second, third and special prize each.

(11) Minister visits 250-ton rice mill in Letpadan

YANGON, 30 Aug - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, accompanied by Director-General of Border Trade Department Col Min Hla Aung, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Saw Aung and officials, visited the 250-ton rice mill in Letpadan Township, Bago Division, yesterday morning. At the project supervisory office, the minister was briefed by officials on progress of work in building the mill and functions of the mill.

The minister inspected the test-run of the mill, and gave instructions.
