(1) Secretary-1 receives Member of the House of Representatives of Japan

YANGON, 27 Aug - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Member of the House of Representatives of Japan Mr Shingo Nishimura and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

Member of the House of Representatives of Japan and-party was accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr- Kazuo Asakai.

(2) Secretary-1 receives Chairman of Premier Oil

YANGON, 27 Aug - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman Mr David John and party of Premier Oil PLC (London) at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the protocol Department.

(3) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Malaysia
 

YANGON, 27 Aug - Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, on behalf of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman, received Ambassador of Malaysia Dato' Abdul Wahib bin Harun, who has completed his tour of duty, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 3 pm today.

Present were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

(4) Agreement to repair furnace of Thayet Cement Factory signed

YANGON, 27 Aug - Myanma Ceramic Industries, Yunnan Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation and Yadana Theingi Co Ltd signed an agreement for repairing furnace of Thayet Cement Factory in Magway Division at the Ministry of Industry-1 this afternoon.

The signing ceremony was attended by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Col Than Zin, heads of departments and officials of YMEIEC, Three Elephant Cement Plant, China Perfect Machinery Industry Corp Ltd and Yadana Theingi.

Managing Director U Than Shwe of MCI, Chairman Mr Lin Zai You of YMEIEC, General Manager Mr Song Suogen of China Perfect Machinery Industry Corp Ltd, Managing Director of Three Elephant Cement Plant Mr Yunn Fa Gang and Managing Director of Yadana-Theingi U Aik Yi Signed the agreement.

(5) Thai traditional dance troupe leaves for home

YANGON, 27 Aug - The 15-member Thai traditional dance troupe led by Mr Kietisak Itenayanan, which entertained the public to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Myanmar and Thailand left here by air this evening for Thailand.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General U Tin Htoo and officials of the Fine Arts Department and officials of the Royal Thai Embassy.

(6) PRC journalists go sightseeing, visit NPE head office

YANGON, 27 Aug - The visiting six-member Chinese journalist delegation went sightseeing in the city today.

Led by Mr Lai Nanchi, Vice-Chairman of Guangzhou Daily of the Republic of China, the Chinese journalists visited the Shwedagon where they donated cash and signed in the visitors book.

The guests then proceeded to the People's Square and People's Park where they studied Pyidaungsu Ayeyeiknyein.

Administrative Officer U Win Htein and officials explained about it to the journalists who signed in the visitors book.

Afterwards, the Chinese delegation called on Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise at . his office on Theinbyu Road.

With Managing Director U Tin Kha, were Director (News) U Hla Tun, Director (Administration) U Soe Win, Chief Editor U Soe Myint of Myanma Alin Daily, Chief Editor U Ye Tint of Kyemon Daily, Chief Editor U Kyaw Mm of The New Light of Myanmar, Chief Editor U Zaw Mm Them of Myanma News Agency (Internal), Deputy Director (Administration) U Hmwe Kyi and advisers to NPE U Kyi Nyunt and U Maung Maung Nyo.

The Chinese journalists were accompanied by officials of Embassy of the people's Republic of China.

Both sides discussed matters relating to print media between the two countries.

Next, the Chinese journalists visited Myanma Alin Daily where Chief Editor U Soe Myint and officials welcomed them and conducted them around.

Later, they visited the National Museum on Pyay Road where they were welcomed by Deputy Director-General U Kyaw Win and officials of Department of Cultural Institute.

The Chinese journalists proceeded to Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) where they held discussions on radio and TV broadcasting with Director (Administration) U Ohn Myint and Director (Broadcasting) U Ko Ko Htwe and officials of MRTV.

Afterwards, they toured MRTV studios.

(7) Home Affairs Minister meets ministry personnel

YANGON, 27 Aug - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met personnel of Myanmar Police Force, General Administration Department, Prisons Department and Bureau of Special Investigation at the ministry today.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, heads of departments and senior officials of MPF, GAD, PD and BSI.

The minister explained the political, economic and social situation of the nation and responsibilities of the service personnel.

He said the ministry is implementing the four political objectives of the National Objectives of the State and will have to strive for achieving success in implementing the aims of the State, the ministry and departments concerned.

The Head of State himself provides guidance for success of the aims of the ministry, he said, and spoke of the need for the personnel to strive with unity and good conviction to improve work efficiency.

At present, those having negative views are trying to mislead the people and destabilize their safe and tranquil life, using various ways including spreading rumors and fabrications, he said.

He stressed the need for the personnel to strive for development of the State and the people with national spirit and patriotism without being influenced by those destructive views and false news.

The minister urged them to make utmost efforts for progress of the departmental work as well as cooperation between the departments and gave instructions to carry out staff welfare.

(8) More archery teams arrive

YANGON, 27 Aug - The archery teams of respective countries arrived here by air this evening to take part in 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit First Round Competition in Yangon.

Vice-Chairman of International Archery Federation Mr Donald M Lovo and archery teams of Thailand, Indonesia and Chinese Taipei arrived here by air today.

The archers were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe, Secretary U Tin Aung, Joint-Secretary U Kyaw Oo and officials of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation.

(9) Ambassador of ROK calls on Minister for Culture

YANGON, 27 Aug - Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr Kyong Bo Choi called on Minister for Culture U Win Sein at his office at 2:30 pm today.

They discussed bilateral cooperation in culture.

Also present were Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt, Director-General U Tin Htoo of Fine Arts Department, Director-General U Myint Thein Swe of Department of Cultural Institute and Director-General U Nyunt Han of Department of Archaeology.

(10) Illegal logs, timber seized in Thabeikkyin

YANGON, 27 Aug - A team of officials and personnel of Forest Department seized illegal sawn timber, logs and charcoal and one unauthorized saw mill motor-engine in Zayatkwin Village, Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Division, and nabbed 35 people illegally carrying logs in ShweU Daung Forest Reserve area on 15 and 16 August.

The seized sawn timber included 1.59 ton of sawn teak, 8.574 tons of No 1.

Group teak logs, 0.367 ton of No I Group sawn teak, 3.87 tons of teak posts, 12.964 tons of other timber logs, 1.877 ton of other sawn timber, 0.36 ton of other timber logs and 98 bags of charcoal in Zayatkwin Village, Thabeikkyin Township, and 4.5 tons of teak logs in ShweU Daung Forest Reserve.

Legal action is being taken against the owners of the illegal saw mill engine, logs and sawn timber.

(11) MIC Secretary receives Director of International Marble Institute

YANGON, 27 Aug - Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received Director and Secretary Mr Eng Pado Marone and party of International Marble Institute of Italy,

accompanied by Ambassador of Italy Mr Cesare Capitani, at his office at 2 pm today.

They discussed investment in mining.

Present were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.
