(1) Secretary-1 receives Ambassador of Malaysia

YANGON, 25 Aug - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Abdul Wahab bin Harun at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

(2) 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit First Round Competition reflects stability, peace, prosperity and unity in Myanmar

YANGON, 25 Aug - Patron of Organization Committee for the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit First Round Competition Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary- l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this morning inspected the dress rehearsal for the opening of the Competition at the National Indoor Stadium- l, Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, and attended the Competitions Organizing Leading Committee meeting held in the Ruby Room of the stadium.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said he had witnessed preparations for the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit First Round Competition were complete and satisfactory. Hence, he said, participating teams would gain new experience.  He said the contestants would appreciate the nationalities traditional dances and an epic featuring the archery from the Epic Ramayana to be presented at the opening ceremony for their high standard.

He said some news agencies today are disseminating false and exaggerated news about Myanmar. Subversive group inside the country is also committing destructive acts and preventing foreign visitors from coming to the country, he said.

He pointed out that the subversive group is engaged in destructive acts while the government is undertaking constructive programmes. However, he said, it is usual for the constructive forces to win victory eventually and destructionists will turn out to be losers. Constructive forces will realize their objectives if they carry out the tasks boldly with the correct stand, belief and conviction.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt called on the departmental personnel and non-governmental organizations to make concerted efforts for the success of the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit 1st Round Competition.

Also present at the meeting were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of department, and members of the Leading Committee, the Work Committee and subcommittees.

Next, Chairman of the Leading Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win and President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe reported on preparations for the opening ceremony to be held on a grand scale and participating teams.

Afterwards, the chairmen and responsible personnel of the Decoration Sub-committee, Reception Sub-committee, Information and Records Sub-committee, Fund Raising Sub-committee, Health Sub-committee, Transport Sub-committee, Sports Equipment Collection Subcommittee and Book Compilation Sub-committee reported on the work done by the respective Sub-committees.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt replied to points raised and he delivered the closing address.  He said he had seen responsible personnel of various ministries, NGOs, cultural troupe members of the States and Divisions and students actively and delightfully taking part in the preparations for the success of the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit First Round Competition.

He noted that the 1st Round Competition will reflect stability, peace, prosperity, unity and collective efforts of Myanmar.  He called for sustained efforts to be able to organize the competition extensively and systematically.

After the meeting, the Secretary-1 proceeded to the Thuwunna Youth Training Centre and inspected Myanmar traditional archery exhibition and preparations for the competition.

He later observed Myanmar archers practicing for the competition and encouraged them.

A rapid shooting contest was then organized.  The Secretary-l presented prizes to two men archers and two women archers who got the highest marks.

(3) Deputy Premiers inspect construction projects, factories in Dagon Myothit (South)

YANGON, 25 Aug - Deputy Prime Ministers Chairman of Myanma Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun inspected construction projects at Dagon Myothit and Seikkan Township and factories being built with the permission of MIC in Dagon Myothit (South) Industrial Zone today.

Accompanied by Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and departmental officials, the deputy premiers this morning arrived at the hall of the Human Settlement and Housing Development Department in the industrial zone in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township where they were welcomed by officials.

Director-General U Arnt Kyaw of DHSHD briefed them on building of an industrial city in the township and Managing Director Dr Mya Thida of Services International Co Ltd on world-class Kanthaya Golf Course Project being implemented.

The deputy premiers gave instructions and inspected scale models of the projects.

They then oversaw a multipurpose gymnasium being built by DHSHD and the garment factory being run by Myanmar Glogon Co Ltd with the permission of MIC there.

Next, they inspected Yuzana Garden City Project being jointly implemented by DHSHD and Yuzana Construction Co Ltd, heard reports presented by U Htay Myint of Yuzana Construction and gave instructions.

The deputy premiers proceeded to Dagon Myothit (South) Industrial Zone where they inspected the electronic apparatus factory of Earth Industrial (Myanmar) Co Ltd and Zabu Poly Packaging Factory and Myanmar Paper Mill of Asia World Co Ltd.

Director U Maung Maung Lay of Earth Industrial (Myanmar) briefed the deputy premiers on the electronic apparatus factory exporting its products and Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing of Asia World on organizational setup and production of the factories under his company.

(4) MPE, Thai company to jointly conduct pearl culture

YANGON, 25 Aug - Myanma Pearl Enterprise and Myanmar Andaman Pearl Co Ltd of Thailand have agreed to jointly conduct oyster breeding and pearl culture at St Luke' s Island in Taninthayi Division on production sharing basis.

Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint said the Thai company has much experience in oyster breeding, pearl culture and marketing.

His ministry has successfully implemented many production sharing contracts in mineral and gems sectors, he noted, adding today's signing has opened a new front in Myanmar pearl culture in line with the market oriented economy.

Managing Director of MPE U Win Maung and Chairman Mr Vikron Aisiri of MAPCL signed the production-sharing contract.

The two also explained points of the project.

Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at Office of Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Maung Maung presented the MIC permit to Mr Vikron and Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint the work permit.

The ceremony at the Ministry of Mines was also attended by Deputy Minister U Myint Thein and officials of the ministry and the company.

(5) Integrated Management of Maternal and Childhood Illness (IMMCI) strategy explained

YANGON, 25 Aug - A ceremony to explain Integrated Management of Maternal and Childhood Illness (IMMCI) strategy to officials of ministries related to the Ministry of Health and NGOs, sponsored by the Ministry of Health, was held in the meeting hall of Medical Research Department this morning.

Present were Deputy Minister, for Health Dr Mya Oo, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe, Secretary Dr Nyo Nyo, Director-General of Medical Research Department Dr Than Swe, Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner and Resident Representative of UNICEF Dr Rosella Morell, Chairman of Myanmar Medical Association Dr Myo Myint, medical superintendents, professors, specialists, officials of NGOs and WHO and guests.

(6) Hospitals inspected in PyinOoLwin, Northern Shan State

YANGON, 25 Aug - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe, Deputy Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung, visited PyinOoLwin Hospital on 22 August.

Acting Head of District Health Department Dr Phone Myint reported on functions.

The minister inspected the hospital, nursing and mid-wifery training school.

The minister and Col Soe Htay of Kyaukme Station met members of Township Peace and Development Council, health staff and officials of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association at Nawnghkio Hospital and discussed cooperation in health services.

The minister and party inspected Kyaukme and Hsipaw hospitals.

On 23 August, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council (North) Brig-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, the minister and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Thein met Medical Superintendent Dr Than Zaw, doctors and staff at Lashio Hospital.

The minister gave instructions on health care services.  He also inspected nursing and mid-wifery training school and met principal and trainees.

(7) Seminar on Electronic Commerce

YANGON, 25 Aug - Seminar on E Commerce cosponsored by Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Eagle Group of Companies was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Minister Commodore Myo Tint, officials of UMCCI, economic entrepreneurs, guests and enthusiasts totaling about 250.

UMCCI President U Khin Maung Yi spoke on the occasion, and Managing Director of The Eagle Group of Companies Daw Tin Tin Hlaing extended greetings and explained about E Commerce or electronic commerce.

General Manager Mr Pat James of Business Online Ltd explained progress and changes of world communications system on trade along with development of Internet information technology and Daw Khaing Kyawt Kyawt Sein of the Eagle Group of Companies facts about E Commerce.

Afterwards, those present took part in discussions on E Commerce.

(8) National soccer team leaves for Vietnam

YANGON, 25 Aug - Myanmar national soccer team left here by air for Vietnam this morning to take part in Second AFF Tiger Cup 98.

The team was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein win, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, Adviser to the Ministry of Sports Col Ngo Ciin Pau, officials and families of the team members.

Before their departure, the minister gave counsel to the officials and players of the team.

The national team was led by President of Myanmar Football Federation Officer on Special Duty to Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik.

The 25-member team includes Assistant Director of SPED U Ye Htut Tin as manager, Dr Thein Nyunt as medical officer, Assistant Director of SPED U Aye Maung Lay as coach and U Myo Chit of Yangon City Development Committee as assistant coach.

(9) Minister for RT inspects construction of Yin Creek Bridge

YANGON, 25 Aug - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung and officials inspected construction of Yin Creek Bridge on Magway-Taungdwingyi Rail Road on 23 August.

On 24 August, the minister inspected bridges, rails and joints between Taungdwingyi and Pyay Stations. He gave instructions on measures for proper drainage, prevention against erosion of railroads landslide and making efforts for convenience of passengers.

(10) Workshops of No 2 farm equipment factory inspected

YANGON, 25 Aug - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected workshops of No 2 farm equipment factory yesterday.

The minister gave instructions on sanitation, recycling and welfare of service personnel.

In meeting with staff, the minister explained political, economic and social development during ten years, spreading of fabricated news on media by the Western bloc that begrudges progress and peace and tranquillity of Myanmar, attempts to cause unrest in collusion with internal axe-handles and to expel Myanmar from ASEAN and marring efforts of Myanmar for progress.

The director-general of Directorate of Myanma Industrial Planning reported on education promotion programmes.

The minister this morning inspected construction of the hall of Myanma Lacquerware Institute being undertaken by Myanma Industrial Construction Services in Bagan-NyaungU.

The managing director reported on progress of work and the minister inspected the site.

The minister arrived back here this afternoon.

(11) Minister for Industry-l receives Director of Project and Equipment Corporation of India

YANGON, 25 Aug - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung received a five-member multi-disciplinary delegation led by Director of Project and Equipment Corporation of India (PEC) Mr MK Vinayak, accompanied by Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran, at his office at 4.30 pm today.

Present were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Col Than Zin and directors-general and managing directors of the departments and enterprises under the ministry.
