(1) Secretary-1 receives nationalities leader of Shan State East Special Region 4

YANGON 22 Aug - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Area and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received nationalities leader of Shan State East Special Region 4 U Kyi Myint and member U Min Ein at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this evening.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Director General Lt-Col Pe Nyein of Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of departments concerned and officials.

They discussed matters related to promotion of tourism industry, smoothness of transport and communications services and development tasks of the region.

(2) Secretary-1 inspects preparations for 1998 World Ranking Asian Archer Circuit 1st Round Competition

YANGON 22 Aug - Patron of Organization Committee for the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit 1st Round Competition, Yangon, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected preparations for the competition at National Indoor Stadium 1 and Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna Thingangyun Township, this afternoon.

The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of Office of the State Peace and Development Council, arrived at the National Indoor Stadium-1 where they were welcomed by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rangoon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, heads of departments, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials of Sports and Physical Education Department, President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe and officials.

At the indoor stadium, the Secretary-1 viewed the dance performed to the accompaniment of the song "Asia Myanmar" and an episode depicting "Rama Laydawtinkhan" which will be presented at the opening ceremony of the competition and gave instructions.

Next, the Secretary- proceeded to Youth Training Centre where he inspected preparations for an exhibition of Myanmar traditional bows and arrows and the competition.

He then met Myanmar archers who will take part in the competition there and also inspected equipment to be used in the competition.

(3) Secretary-1 oversees Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun) Project

YANGON, 22 Aug - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun) and gave instructions this afternoon.

Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, department heads and officials, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at the worksite of Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun) Project at 3 pm.

They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, department heads, acting Managing Director of Public Works U Shwe Win and officials. At the office of the worksite, the Secretary-1 was briefed by Deputy Superintending Engineer U Myint Lwin on facts about the project and progress of work.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions on timely completion of construction work. Later, the Secretary-1 inspected the worksite of the project. The main bridge(Thingangyun)is 700 feet long, with a 1400-foot- long approach road on the bank of Thingangyun and a 1500 foot--long approach road on the bank of Dagon Myothit (South).

The bridge with 72 foot -wide motorway and two six-foot-wide pedestrian lanes can withstand 60 ton loads.  The bridge lies on the road to the entrance of Yangon.  On completion, the bridge will give easy access to cities of states and divisions, and will enable the public to travel in a short period and contribute to smooth and swift flow of commodities.  It is a bridge that will serve the interest of the State and the national people.

(4) Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers donate dry rations to monasteries in Bahan Township

YANGON, 22 Aug - Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers donated dry rations to Pali Tekkatho Nyaungdon Kyaungtaik at Hlayadana Kyaung in Bahan Township this morning.

Present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo,  Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Duty Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, officials and well-wishers.

(5) Minister inspects cultural heritage in Innwa

YANGON, 22 Aug - Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Director-General of Archaeology Department U Nyunt Han and officials visited Shwesigon Pagoda in Sagamin Village in old Pinya, Mandalay Division, on 9 August.

The minister inspected stone inscriptions of Pinya period and wall paintings and gave instructions on preservation of historic cultural heritage.

The minister also inspected artistic works at Pinsamalainda Myasigon Pagoda built by King Thihathu in 834 Myanmar Era and spoke of maintenance of the pagoda in old style.

The minister visited the 500-year old Maha Mingala Pagoda, ruins of Layhtatkyaungdawgyi, Gudawthit Pagoda and ancient works, Mai Nu Okekyaung and Innwa Shwesigon Pagoda.

At the construction site of Innwa Museum, the minister was briefed on progress of work and tasks to be undertaken by Engineer U Tin Win Sein of Public Works.  The minister paid obeisance to Maha Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda built by King Hanthawady in 1095 in Sinkyone Village, Innwa.

(6) Minister meets 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit umpires athlete

YANGON, 22 Aug - Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, accompanied by Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials, visited Myanmar Archery Federation Training Grounds this morning.

He met those who will umpire the events at the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit 1st Round and the selected archers .

Later, he inspected the poultry farm of the SPED.

(7) UDE radio lectures

YANGON, 22 Aug - Radio Myanmar will broadcast lectures for students of University of Distance Education from first to final year arts, law, economics majors and all first year science majors on 63.49 metre short wave from 8 to 11 pm on 27 August.

The lectures include history for all first year arts majors and law majors, history for third year majors, geography for year geography majors, geography for third year geography majors, law for second year law majors, law for fourth year law majors, of ental studies (Pali) for third year-Myanmars majors and commerce for second year economics majors.

(8) Trainees of Refresher Course No 32 for Basic Education Teachers visits ISPE

YANGON, 22 Aug - Trainees of Refresher Course No 32 for Basic Education Teachers of Phaunggyi Central Institute of Civil Service visited Institute of Sports and Physical Education of the Ministry of Sports today.

On behalf of Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Secretary-General of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw welcomed them at the institute.

Principal of the institute U Kyaw Soe Myint explained to the trainees about the institute.

Afterwards, the trainees watched demonstration of sports teams of thaing, chinlon, karatedo, wushu, weight-lifting and gymnastics federations and aerobic team of the competition and training division of SPED.

(9) Minister for Sports gives lecture

YANGON, 22 Aug - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win gave lecture on sports at Special Refresher Course No 32 for Basic Education Teachers at Central Institute of Civil Service yesterday afternoon.

The minister lectured on sports policy being implemented, future tasks of the Ministry of Sports conducting of sports and education combined training courses, improvement of sports standard, sports festivals at home and abroad and condition of Myanmar Taekwando team which participated in World Youth Taekwando Championship.
