(1)   General Maung Aye inspects Zawgyi Hydel Power Project in Yaksauk Township

YANGON, 15 Aug - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye together with Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, minister and Senior Tatmadaw officers, inspected Zawgyi Hydel Power Project in Yaksauk Township yesterday morning.

Zawgyi Hydel Power Project is being implemented by Myanma Electric Power Enterprise near Indaw Village, 28 miles north of Yaksauk, on Zawgyi creek.

General Maung Aye, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party arrived at the project at 9.30 am and inspected main concrete dam and feeding structure.

They proceeded to the plant under construction and progress of work, installation of machinery, construction of Control room and main station.

At the project site, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Maung Bo, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint briefed General Maung Aye and party on rain fall of the region, storage of water in Zawgyi Dam and implementation of Zawgyi Hydel Power Project.

General Maung Aye attended to their needs.

Then, General Maung Aye presented fruit basket to Mr Zhang Jiming for technicians of Shanghai Co who are engaged in the project.

Zawgyi Dam was commissioned in May 1997.  Upon completion, the hydel power project, will generate 30 million-kilowatt hours of electricity annually.  Efforts are being made to complete the hydel power project in September.

General Maung Aye attended the dinner to mark the graduation of Under-Officers Course No 26 of Tatmadaw (Army) Officers Training School in the Military Appointment Hall of the school in the evening.

(2)   Education promotion programme benefits students, parents, teachers and State

YANGON, 15 Aug - Ceremonies to open new building of Hsinkan Ward Basic Education Primary School in Kyauktan Township, to hand over the building named Thawka No 1 of Basic Education High School No 2 in Kyauktan and 26 renovated Basic Education Primary Schools in Kyauktan Township were held at the respective schools this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of departments, Director-General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win and officials, members of District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Fire Services Department, members of Parent-Teacher Association, Township Education Officers, school heads, teachers and pupils and guests.

The opening ceremony of new building of Hsinkan Basic Education Primary School was held at the school at 1:30 pm.

Director-General U Bo Win and well-wishers U Aung Htwe formally opened the school.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the school.

The two-storey school building was constructed by Myanmar Integrated Post Services Private Co Ltd, at a cost of K 4.1 million.

Then, a ceremony to hand over No 1 Thawka Building of Basic Education High School No 2 and to hand over 26 renovated Basic Education Primary Schools in Kyauktan Township to Basic Education Department was held at the School.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint formally opened the Thawka building.

Deputy Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Aung Kyaw Myint briefed the Secretary-l on construction of two-storey Thawka building and water supply.

Chairman of Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council U Lu Maw explained about the construction of new buildings, renovation of 26 Basic Education Primary Schools in Kyauktan and arrangements for construction of Myoma Basic Education Middle School, at a cost of K 30 million donated by Myanmar Integrated Post Services Private Co Ltd.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Aung Kyaw Myint presented related documents of Thawka building to Director-General U Bo Win.

Well-wisher U Aung Htwe presented related documents of 26 Basic Education Primary Schools to Director-General U Bo Win.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Aung Kyaw Myint presented 5 Green Boards valued at K 45,000 and K 10,000 for trust funds of the school to Headmistress Daw Aye Myat Oo.

U Aung Htwe of Asia Pacific Edible Oil Company presented K 1.5 million for the construction of Basic Education Primary School in Khanaung Village in Kyauktan Township to Director-General U Bo Win.

U Maung Weik of Myanmar Hongliang Co Ltd donated K 500,000 for furniture of the School to Headmistress Daw Aye Myat Oo.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the education promotion programmes are being implemented to turn out outstanding students with good character and a sense of civic duty and to enable them to take part in the school activities.

Education promotion programmes are being implemented by the State for the benefit of the students, parents and teachers as well as the State, he said.

He urged all teachers to strive for implementation of work so as to achieve success of education promotion programmes of the State.

After wards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the newly constructed Thawka building of the school.

Thawka building No 1 was constructed with a cost of US $ 50,000 donated by Chairman of the Institute of World Peace Mr Hideo Watanabi and Honorary Chairman of the 37th OSEAL Forum Organizing Committee Mr Masa Mikato of Japan.

Mr Watanabi and Mr Mikato donated US $ 50,000 during their courtesy call on Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Kyaikhmawwun Yayle Pagoda in Kyauktan where they were welcomed by members of the Board of Trustees.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Shin U Pa Gutta Kyaungsaung.

The Secretary-1 and party then visited Hsutaungpyi Ngasat Pagoda and Kyaikhmawwun Yayle Pagoda and left there in the evening.

(3)   Families of Tatmadawmen, organizations, well-wishers donate alms to Paxiivatti Sarthintaiks in Thingangyun, N Okkalapa Townships

YANGON, 15 Aug - Families of members of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air), organizations and well-wishers donated alms to Pariyatti Sarthintaiks in Thingangyun and North Okkalapa Townships this morning.

The Sarthintaiks in Thingangyun Township were Aungmyeyadana, Mahatheikpan, Shwenaban, Sagaing, Dhammapala Phayathonsu, Mahawithoaddayama, Amatadayi and Yadanagonyi and those in North Okkalapa Township were Arthawady, Aungwady, Thuwunna, Hinthada and Mawkyun.

The alms donation ceremonies held at Sarthintaiks were attended by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than. Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, township authorities and well-wishers.

The alms donated for Aungmyeyadana, Mahatheikpan and Shwenaban Sarthintaiks in North Okkalapa Township were 81 bags of rice, 50 viss of edible oil, 170 viss of iodized salt, 75 sachets of rehydrated salt, 15 packets of soft salt, 20 viss of gram and 50 bottles of assorted traditional medicines.

Donors were families of Tatmadawmen, YCDC, Yangon East District Peace and Development Council, KN Co, Myanma Salt and Marine Chemical Enterprise, Myanmar Wholesale Rice Dealers Association and well-wishers.

The alms donated for Sagaing Dhamapala Phayathonsu, Mahawithoaddayama, Amatadayi and Yadanagonyi Sarthintaiks were 230 bags of rice, 83 viss of edible oil, 650 viss of iodized salt, 300 sachets of rehydrated salt, 60 packets of soft salt, three bags of gram and 200 bottles of assorted traditional medicines.

Donors were families of Tatmadawmen and organizations including Ministry of Commerce, YCDC, Yangon East District and Thingangyun Township Peace and Development Councils and KN Co and well-wishers.

Similarly, the alms-124 bags of rice, 40.viss of edible oil, 300 viss of iodized salt, 150 sachets of rehydrated salt, 30 packets of soft salt, four bags of gram and 100 bottles of assorted traditional medicines- were donated to Arthawady, Aungwady, Thuwunna, Hinthada and Mawkyun Sarthintaiks in North Okkalapa Township by those families of Tatmadawmen, organizations and well-wishers.

(4)   18 instigator foreigners deported

YANGON, 15 Aug - Convinced that the 18 foreigners who distributed instigative leaflets with every intention of disrupting the peace and tranquillity of the State had violated the existing law of Myanmar, the court handed down five years' imprisonment to each.

Under Section 401 (I) of the Criminal Procedural Law, the punishment handed down on them were suspended, and the Ministry of Home Affairs decided to allow them to leave here on 15 August in consideration of the fact that most of them are from neighbouring nations, members of ASEAN, that their countries and Myanmar are on an existing friendly terms, that they did not know the situation of Myanmar definitely, that they were found guilty of committing offence because of persuasion and deception of Alternative Asean Network on Burma, that they confessed to having committed the offence and that requests were made by their families and officials of respective governments.

The 18 instigator foreigners were deported and they left for Bangkok, Thailand, by MAI Flight UB 225 at 7:30 am today.

They were seen off at the airport by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ambassador of Indonesia Maj-Gen (Police) A Poerwanto Lenggono, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak, Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Sonia Cataumber Brady, Charge d'Affaires ai of the Embassy of the United States of America Mr Kent M Wiedemann, Second Head of mission of the Embassy of Australia Mr Douglas Richard Foskett and Third Secretary of Malaysia Embassy Mr Rosli Bin Osman.

(5)   Organizations carrying out nefarious acts in the guise of social work condemned in the strongest terms
 

YANGON, 15 Aug - Legal action has been taken against 18 foreigners who dropped from taxis and distributed small instigative leaflets they had smuggled into the country at busy places in Yangon on 9 August morning with the aim of disrupting the peace and tranquillity of the nation, creating civil unrest and causing panic among the public.

According to the confessions of instigator foreigners, they had been organized and sent by International Organization of Democracy in Burma of the USA, Alternative Asean Network on Burma and Union for Civil Liberty of Thailand and Initiative for International Dialogue of the Philippines. A meeting had been held in Siam Beverly Hotel, Thailand, on 6 August.  At this meeting, Miss Debbie Stothard and officials of Alternative Asean Network on Burma of Thailand had given detailed instructions to be carried out.  They had also arranged leaflets to be distributed and fixed the places and time to distribute the leaflets.  Their main purpose was to distribute instigative leaflets at busy places in Yangon on 8 August with the aim of causing panic among the public and creating unrest.  This organization had defrayed traveling and food expenses.

It has been found that International Organization of Democracy in Burma of the USA, Alternative Asean Network on Burma and Union for Civil Liberty of Thailand and Initiative International Dialogue of the Philippines are organizations interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and under the pretext of social ground and democracy; the intent of the premeditated and synchronized incident which had happened recently, was to disrupt the peace and tranquillity of the nation and to use those who had not had any knowledge of Myanmar by deception.

Regarding this, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement that International Organization of Democracy in Burma of the USA, Alternative Asean Network on Burma and Union for Civil Liberty of Thailand and Initiative International Dialogue of the Philippines, which had interfered in the internal affairs of Myanmar by carrying out nefarious acts in the guise of social work under the pretext of democracy, protesting and condemning such acts in the strongest terms.

(6)   Commander of Coastal Region Command, Minister for I & P elaborate on political, economic and social situation

YANGON, 15 Aug - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, together with Director-General of the Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay and officials. arrived Myeik on 13 Aug evening.

They were welcomed there by Chairman of 'Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung,- Commander of Taninthayi Naval Region Commander Headquarters Commodore Soe Myint and Deputy Commander Captain Tin Latt, division-level department heads, executives of Myeik District and Township USDAs and employees of District and Township INRD.

The minister and the director-general inspected the office of Myeik Township INRD.

In the evening, the commander and the minister met commanders of divisions and regiments and district-level department heads from Myeik Station and executives of Myeik District and Township USDAs at the guest house of Coastal Region Command, and elaborated on political, economic and social situation.

On 14 August morning, member of the Panel of Patrons of USDA Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and member of the CEC U Saw Tun attended a ceremony to present certificates of USDA Basic Accountancy Course sponsored by Myeik District USDA.

The commander and the CEC member spoke on the occasion.

They then presented certificates to 25 trainees.

The commander accepted K 100,000 donated towards the funds of Myeik District USDA by Managing Director of International Taninthayi Fisheries Company U Kya Maung.

U Saw Tun also met members of Township Peace and Development Council, department heads, officials of Taninthayi Naval Region Command Headquarters, towns-elders, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, employees of the office of Township INRD and members of Township USDA in the hall of Kyunsu Township.

He accepted K 100,000 donated towards the funds of Kyunsu Township USDA by Managing Director of International Taninthayi Fisheries U Kya Maung and K 50,000 by Managing Director of Pyiphyotun Company U Hla Than.

(7)   Development of girls and women in Kyauktan Township coordinated

YANGON, 15 Aug - Coordination meeting on development of girls and women in Kyauktan Township sponsored by Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs was held at the office of Township Peace and Development Council this morning.

Present were Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr May May Yi, Secretary of MNWCWA Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, member of MNWCWA Head of Working Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation Dr Khin Win Shwe, Director of Yangon Division General Administration Department U Kan Myint, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein and officials.

Col Sit Myaing explained the purpose. Leader of girl and women group Daw Khin Myo Myint reported on project and tasks to be undertaken.

Dr Khin Win Shwe discussed violence against women.

Those present then took part in the discussions.

YANGON, 15 Aug - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo accompanying Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, who is currently on an inspection tour of Shan State, attended the opening ceremony of newly built Yathawady Hall of Yaksauk yesterday afternoon.

Also present were Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen Maung Bo, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Commander of Bahtoo Station and Commandant of Defence Services (Army) Combat Training School Brig-Gen Moe Hein, heads of departments of Office of the State Peace and Development Council and organizations concerned, township level departmental officials, officials of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Maternal and child Welfare Association and Local people.

(9)   Minister inspects all-round renovation of Shwebontha Muni Pagoda in Padaung

YANGON, 15 Aug - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, together with officials, inspected all-round renovation of Shwebontha Muni Pagoda in Padaung Township, Pyay District, yesterday evening and this morning.

He inspected progress of work and encouraged teachers and students of Padigon and Thegon Townships who were contributing voluntary labour.

Member of CEC U Pan Aung attended a ceremony to conclude the basic accountancy course of Pyay District USDA this morning.

He spoke on the occasion.

Then, he presented certificates to trainees and then accepted USDA membership applications.

The commander of No 66 LID and officials presented prizes to outstanding trainees and gifts to course instructors.
