YANGON, 1 Aug - Special Refresher Course No.32 for Basic Education Teachers opened at the Central Institute of Civil Service in Hlegu Township today with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(2) Upgrading of Tiger Parahita School coordinated

YANGON, 1 Aug - A coordination meeting on teaching of higher education at Tiger Parahita Training School for Development of National Races was held at the meeting hall of the Office of  Commander-in-Chief (Army) of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon.

It was attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Chairman of Yangon City Development  Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Pe Nyein, departmental heads and officials.

The Secretary-1 said the State Peace and development Council has assigned duties to the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs to reestablish the Tiger Parahita Training School for Development of National Races and over 200 children are attending Tiger Parahita School.

He said orphans from border regions and Social Welfare Training Schools continued their studies at Tiger Parahita School and spoke of the need to make arrangements for opening of the school as a centre of higher education for them.

He said orphans from border regions are now learning their basic education at the school and arrangements are to be made for them to continue study of higher education for turning out intellectuals and intelligentsia.

The Secretary-1 discussed implementation of plans by the respective ministries.

Next, Minister Col Thein Nyunt reported on history of the school, its objectives, organizational set-up, number of children, academic matters, finance, welfare and buildings.

The Secretary- 1 took part in the discussions and called for speedy implementation of the plans.

(3) Secretary-1 attends reception for 71st Founding Anniversary of PLA

YANGON, 1 Aug - A reception to mark 71st Anniversary of Founding of the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China was held at the Office of Military Attache of PRC on Khayaybin Street in Dagon Township this evening.  Present were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife, Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife, Secretary-3 Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife, ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, ambassadors, military attaches and their wives of missions in Yangon, Charge d'Affaires ai of the PRC Embassy Mr Yu Tiegen and wife, military attaches and wives and guests.

(4) Secretary-2 attends prize distribution ceremony for paddy cultivation and paddy production of Ayeyawady Division in 1997

YANGON, 1 Aug - A prize distribution ceremony for paddy cultivation and paddy production of Ayeyawady Division in 1997-98 and for outstanding performance in paddy sale were held at Ayeyashwewa Hall in Pathein this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Thura Shwe Man, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Commander of South-West Command Col Tint Swe, heads of departments and Office of the State Peace and Development Council, Tactical Operation Commanders, members of the Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council, division level departmental officials, chairmen and members of district and township Peace and Development Councils, officials and officials of non-government organizations, entrepreneurs, prize winners and guests.

(5) Minister for A&I inspects irrigation facilities in Sagaing, Mandalay Divisions

YANGON, 1 Aug - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected Thaphanseik Multi-purpose Reservoir Project in Kyunhla Township, Sagaing Division, on 30 July evening.

Accompanied by Director-General of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint and officials, he oversaw construction of the main dam and emergency and main spillways on eastern bank of Mu River and construction of a concrete retaining wall for preventing seepage and earth work being carried out for emergence of sites for building other walls and main dam on the eastern bank as well.

The minister helped the personnel find solutions to difficulties faced at work and oversaw installation of TMW heavy equipment carried from Mon-Creek Reservoir for building of retaining walls.

On completion of the project, the reservoir can store 2.88 million cubic-feet of water. It can also irrigate half a million acres of cultivated area and generate 117.2 million kwh yearly.

Yesterday, meeting personnel of the project, he spoke of the need to complete the reservoir as targeted, meeting set standards, to take care in carrying out construction work and to make effective arrangements for staff welfare and urged them to submit unsolvable problems to superior officials.

The minister later proceeded to Kindat Weir where he inspected inflow and outflow of water, water supply and maintenance.

Officials concerned briefed the minister on canals of the weir and diverting water to Kaboe Weir.

The minister gave instructions to systematically maintain Mindat Weir for ensuring long-term durability.

In the evening, he oversaw maintenance work of Mandalay Main Canal, part of the Sedawgyi Dam irrigation system.

(6) Results of BEHS exam announced

YANGON, 2 Aug - The results of the Basic Education High School examination held in March 1998 were announced today.

The results are posted at the respective examination centres and schools in States, Divisions and Townships.

The results will also be posted at Basic Education High School No 1 in Insein. BEHS No 1 in Yankin, BEHS No 3 in Kamayut, BEHS No 1 in Lanmadaw, BEHS No 6 in Botahtaung and BEHS No 3 in South Okkalapa Township.

(7) Minister for Transport receives GMs of Shanghai Diesel Engine

YANGON, 1 Aug- Minister for Transport Lt-Gen in Ngwe received General Managers Mr Xu Wei Da and Mr Hong Ling Bai of Shanghai Diesel Engine Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China at his office at 2 pm today.

Present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Managing Director Col Thein Htay of Myanma Port Authority and Managing Director U Percy Maung Maung of Myanma Shipyards.

(8) Minister visits Institute of Sports and Physical Education

YANGON, 1 Aug - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win inspected institute of Sports and Physical Education this morning.

He was accompanied by Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, OSD to Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik and officials.

The minister inspected Olympic bottled water factory in the compound of the institute and Myanmar national archery team undergoing training for Asia round robin archery championship as well.

He urged the archers to strive for bringing honour to the State through achieving success in the championship.

The minister also inspected poultry farms, sanitary arrangements, fish breeding .pond and mess for the trainees in the compound of the institute and gave instructions.

(9) Union of Myanmar Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission: Announcement No.1394

9th Waxing of Wagaung, 1360 ME (1 August 1998)

Subject: Permission given to U Aye Myint to resign as Pyithu Hluttaw representative-elect of Gyobingauk Township Constituency 1 in Bago Division.

1. U Aye Myint of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Gyobingauk Township Constituency 1 in Bago Division, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because of old age and health.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Aye Myint has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative elect of Gyobingauk Constituency 1 effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(10) Cornerstone laid for Assembly Hall of Sagaing Cooperatives Regional College

YANGON, 1 Aug - The foundation laying ceremony for the Assembly Hall of Sagaing Cooperatives Regional College was held at the college compound in Shwethama Ward, Sagaing Township, this morning, attended by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San.

Present were Commander of No 33 LID Col Win Myint, Secretary of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Htut, Secretary of Sagaing District Peace and Development Council Maj Ohn Myint, Principal of the college U Chit Swe and teachers, Deputy Director U Kyi Win of Sagaing Division Cooperatives Department, Chairman U Maung Maung Lay of Sagaing Division Cooperative Syndicate, executives of Sagaing Division Union Solidarity and Development Association and students.

Vice-Principal of the college U Han Soe and in charge of construction project U Kaung Kyi briefed the minister on chart of building, finance and construction. The minister gave instructions on timely completion and use of funds.

At 9:23 am, the minister and officials laid corner stones.  The minister then laid the plaque and
sprinkled scented water on it.  He inspected the halls of the college and donated a 21 inches TV for the college.

(11)  Yangon-Mandalay Highway inspected

YANGON, 1 Aug - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of Public Works, inspected Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Bago and Mandalay Divisions on 30 July.

The minister left Pyinmana for Bago on 30 July morning.

He met engineers and personnel of Public Works in towns on his way to Bago and gave instructions to take care of maintaining the highway for long-term durability and not to lose sight of condition of bridges along the highway.

The minister oversaw maintenance work on No 3 / 122 Tonkan Bridge and Gadok Creek Bridge and repair of road section between Mile 96/5 Post and Mile 98/5 Post on the highway.

In Bago, the minister inspected construction of a toll gate.
