(1)   Vice-Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) receives Political Commissar of Chengdu Military Command, PLA

YANGON, 23 July - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received visiting Political Commissar general Zhang Zhijian and party of Chendu Military Command, People's Liberation Army (PLA) of People's Republic of China, at Zeyathiri Beikman, Konmyinttha at 2 pm today.

Present also were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen khin Nyunt, Secretary 2 Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairmans of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Director of Artillery and Armour Brig-Gen Kyi Win.

The Political Commissar and party of Chengdu Military Command, PLA, were accompanied by Charge d'Affaires ai of the PRC Embassy Mr Yu Tiegen and Attache Sr Col He Yaokui.

(2)   MIC Chairman leaves for Singapore

YANGON, 23 July - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung left here by air this morning for Singapore to attend the Meeting of Heads of Investment Institutions of ASEAN Member Countries.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow, officials of the Government Office and MIC Office.

Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung were accompanied by Personal Staff Officer to the Deputy Prime Minister Capt Aung San Win.

(3)   Training of traditional medicine drug inspectors begins

YANGON, 23 July - Training of traditional medicine drug inspectors, jointly sponsored by Traditional Medicine Department and World Health Organization, opened this morning at TMD, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

This is the first such training jointly sponsored by the department and a UN body, aiming at conserving and promoting the potency of genuine traditional medicines in accord with the guideline of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, he noted.

Since ancient times, Myanmars have used traditional medicines and till today, they are still popular among people both in urban and rural areas, he said.

Myanmar enacted the Traditional Medicine Law on 25 July 1996, issuing patents and licences to entrepreneurs and testing traditional medicines in advanced laboratories, he said.

There are two sectors- law and regulation and enforcement and laboratory services in controlling medicines and that the course was opened to check medicines to implement the enforcement sector, he noted.

According to WHO record, people of many developing countries are still depending on traditional medicines and its conference has passed a resolution to make arrangements for traditional medicines to include In public health care services, he said.

The 44th WHO Conference held in 1991 urged assessment of policies and laws on traditional medicine of member countries to promote its role in the national health system, he recounted.

The Traditional Medicine Law was enacted in Myanmar to uplift the potency of indigenous medicines and to ensure safety for users, he said.  Ministry of Health is sponsoring seminars and paper reading sessions on the medicine in all States and Divisions to produce potent drugs and conducting research to ensure their potency.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, directors-general of departments under the ministry, deputy directors-general, directors, WHO representatives, traditional medicine practitioners, State/Division health officers, trainees and guests were also present.

(4)   Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs holds coord meeting

YANGON, 23 July - The meeting on Myanmar national women's affairs was held at Bogyoke Aung San Hall of the Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.  Secretary of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Director- General Col Sit Myaing of the Social Welfare Department clarified the guidance given in Myanmar national women's affairs by the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council.

Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yi briefed the meeting on the functions of the Committee.

Head of the working group for protection of women from violence and rehabilitation Dr Khin Win Shwe briefed the meeting on prevention of women from violence and research multiplier course to be conducted.

Head of the working group for education Professor of Psychology Department of Yangon University Daw Khin Aye Win briefed them on counselling for woman.

Staff Officers of State and Division Social Welfare Departments and principals gave supplementary reports to the meeting.

In the afternoon, they held the meeting on functions of the National Committee on Child Rights.

(5)   Chief of Staff (Army) hosts dinner in honour of Political Commissar of Chengdu Military Command of PRC

YANGON, 23 July - Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo hosted dinner in honour of Chinese military delegation led by Political Commissar of Chengdu Military Command, People's Liberation Army of People's Republic of China, General Zhang Zhijian at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 7 pm today.

It was attended by Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, senior Tatmadaw officers and officials of Chinese Embassy.

(6)   PRC military delegation arrives

YANGON, 23 July - Chinese military delegation led by Political Commissar of Chengdu Military Command of the People's Liberation Army of People's Republic of China General Zhang Zhijian arrived here by air this morning.

The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Director of Artillery and Armour Brig-Gen Kyi Win, Colonel General Staff (Admin/Operations) of Office of Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Col Myint Swe and officials, Charge d' Affaires ai and Military, Attaches of Chinese Embassy.

(7)   Minister for A & I inspects mosquito coil factory, Mars warehouse at Nwekhwe

YANGON, 23 July - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected Mars Mosquito Coil Factory, the joint venture of Myanma Agriculture Service and Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, at Nwekhwe Village in Mingaladon Township yesterday.

He was accompanied by Director-General of Agriculture Planning Department Dr Mya Maung and Managing Director of MAS U Tun Than.

After hearing reports on production, the minister inspected the quality, production sections, quality control section and packaging.

The factory started to run on 1 December 1997 and is producing 72,000 coils per day.

The minister and party proceeded to the warehouse of MAS in the village.

General Manager U Nyan Tun of the procurement and distribution division of MAS briefed them on the functions of the warehouse.

The minister and party later inspected production of Shwewahnan stone-powder fertilizer and plastic bags for packaging.

The fertilizer contains 40 per cent calcium and seven per cent sulphur and it can treat the soil by using 4-10 bags of it per acre to boost paddy yield.

Later, they inspected storage of pesticides to be distributed for the cultivation this season and the fumigation system for export beans.

(8)   Minister for Energy receives Chairman of PTTEP International

YANGON, 23 July - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi received Chairman Dr Surakiart Sathirathai and party of PITEP International Ltd of Thailand at his office at 3 pm today.

They discussed the energy the sector.

Present were Deputy Minister U Tin Tun, Director-General U Soe Myint of the Energy Planning Department and Managing Director U Kyaw Nyein of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.

(9)   Donation for No.2 Military Hospital

YANGON, 23 July - Well-wishers U Kyauk-Daw Khin Myint of DaikU Township, Bago Division, donated K 148,000 for patients of No.2 Military Hospital at the hospital this morning.

Present were Lt-Col Aung Myint, guests and well-wishers.

(10)  First bi-annual meeting of SWD ends

YANGON, 23 July - The first bi-annual meeting of the Social Welfare Department ended with the speech by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone at the Head Office of SWD this afternoon.

Also present were Director-General of SWD Col Sit Myaing, Director-General of Relief and Resettlement U Saw Thein, Deputy Director-General U Aung Soe of Fire Services Department, divisional SWD officers, principals of training schools and managers of rehabilitation centres for drug addicts.

In his speech, the minister noted the six objectives of the department are to contribute to one of the social objectives-uplift of health, fitness and education standards of the entire nation-; to ensure development of human resources; to help those, who are in need of social welfare assistance due to various circumstances; to take preventive measures for reducing social problems; to organize volunteers who will participate in social welfare activities; to make plans for social development to contribute to the country.

He called on officials to dutifully discharge their duties in accordance with the objectives, to take remedial measures after reviewing weaknesses and strengths of the departmental work done, to be dutiful in carrying out the tasks in connection with social development, women's affairs and child rights and to make plans for future tasks.

(11)  K 1 million for Myanmar Women's Day Essay Competitions

YANGON, 23 July - A ceremony to donate cash for Myanmar Women's Day Essay Competition was held at Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Managing Director of Myanmar Taisan Waih Co Ltd U Aung Win-Daw Khin Htay and U Tin Ngwe of Lanmadaw Township donated K 1 million to Chairk person of Organizing Committee for Myanmar Women's Day Dr Khin Win Shwe who presented a certificate of honour.

Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Professor Daw May May Yi thanked the donors.
