(1)   Magaik, Salwe to be offered to Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image

YANGON, 18 July - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this morning inspected the tasks for offering Magaik and Salwe to Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image and all-round renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-1 arrived on the precincts of Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image on Gyatawya Street, Bahan Township, at 9:15 am.

He was welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, departmental heads and officials, township authorities and members of the Board of Trustees.

First, the Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to the Bronze Buddha Image.

Col Hsan Hsint and officials briefed the Secretary-1 on the tasks for offering Magaik and Salwe to the Bronze Buddha Image.

The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions.

Well-wishers may donate gold, jewellery and cash for offering of Magaik and Salwe to the Bronze Buddha Image at the Committee for All-round Renovation of the Bronze Buddha Image in Military Region 3, Bahan Township Peace and Development Council Office and the Office of the Board of Trustees.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to the Shwedagon Pagoda and they, were welcomed on arrival at the gate of eastern stairway by members of the Board of Trustees.

Next, the Secretary-1 inspected splendid decorations with traditional works of art, the prayer hall at the southern stairway and renovation of Gandakuti Taik.
 

They then paid obeisance to Padamya Myetshin Buddha on the upper terrace and later inspected renovation of Sasanika buildings on the pagoda platform and rebuilding of the northern stairway.

(2)   Yeiktha, Hostel for athletes of Sports and Physical Education Department open

YANGON, 18 July - The opening ceremony of the Yeiktha and Hostel for the athletes of the Sports and Physical Education Department of the Ministry of Sports was held at the Yeiktha at the National Sports Park (Thuwunna) in Thingangyun Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Ministers Dr Mya Oo and U Kyaw Aye, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council, Director-General of SPED Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials, Officer on Special Duty at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau, athletes and special guests.

First, Director of SPED Lt-Col Than Zaw briefed them on construction of the Yeiktha and Hostel for athletes.

Afterwards Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win formally opened the Yeiktha.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the stone inscription of the Yeiktha. The Secretary-l and party later inspected the Yeiktha and Hostel.

Building and opening of the hostels for athletes is one of the tasks covered by the Project for Promotion of Myanmar Sports Standard which also includes camp training and organizing sports contests.

Foundation of the hostel, which was opened today, was laid on 19 June 1997. The Secretary-1 and ministers laid cornerstones.

Myanmar Silon Co undertook construction of Hostels No.6 and No.7 and Yeiktha 3 and Marathon Construction Co built Hostel No.8.

Each of the three-storey hostels has eight single rooms and 42 double rooms and can accommodate 92 athletes.

The Yeiktha can provide enough space for 300 athletes.

(3)   Secretary-2 attends opening ceremony of Toyo Battery Factory in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone

YANGON, 18 July - Proven Technology Industry Co Ltd opened the Toyo Battery Factory in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The ceremony at Sabeyon Street was also attended by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Vice Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental officials, Managing Director of Proven Technology Industry Co Ltd, members of Board of Director and guests.

Managing Director of Proven Technology Industry Co Ltd U Ohn Lwin explained the salient points about the factory.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and U Ohn-Lwin formally opened the factory.

Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo signed in the visitor's book in the factory and inspected it.

Managing Director U Ohn Lwin presented batteries to officials of the Office of Director of Supply and Transport, Yangon City Development Committee, Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races and Road Transport to mark the opening ceremony of the factory.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung extended greetings.

Managing Director and advisers thanked the officials.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo looked into the requirements.

The factory will produce international standard batteries and will be selling the products at reasonable price.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-2 inspected Shwethazin Wool Factory and Garment Factory of Best Industrial Company Limited in the industrial Zone.

(4)   Minister for A&I attends paddy transplanting competition in Taikkyi Township

YANGON, 18 July - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin attended Hmawby Township Paddy Transplanting Competition at the field of farmer U Aung Khaing in Kalagon Village-tract, Hmawby Township, this morning.

Accompanied by officials, the minister met paddy transplanters and spoke of the importance of meeting measurement standards set for the space between transplanted seedlings so as to boost per-acre yield.

He urged the paddy transplanters to strive for meeting the standards.

The minister then inspected seedlings used in the competition and spoke of the need to met the set standard for the age of the seedling.

He cordially conversed with farmers who attended the competition, and urged them to follow the procedures and techniques issued for boosting paddy production.

Afterwards, the minister inspected 2000-ton Sugar Mill Construction Project near Gomlyindan Village in Taikkyi Township where he heard a report on progress of the project presented by the Project Director.

(5)   Commander inspects development work, checkpoint

YANGON, 18 July - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint inspected removing dirt and rubbish at the Nadi Creek in Aungmyethazan Township so as to ensure smooth flow of water in drains in eastern sector of Mandalay on 15 July.

He was accompanied by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Acting Tactical Operation Commander Lt-Col Kyaw Thura and officials.

Afterwards, the commander proceeded to the PyinOoLwin Township, heard reports on functions of the checkpoint presented by officials and gave instructions.

Next, the commander inspected harvested summer paddy fields and ploughing for monsoon paddy at the fields near Aungpinle Village and gave instructions on harvesting of summer paddy, cultivation of monsoon paddy, agricultural technique, assistance for farmers and irrigation of paddy fields.

(6)   Myanmar student delegation leaves for Japan

YANGON, 18 July - An ll-member Myanmar student delegation led by Headmaster U Tin Win of Basic Education High School No.2 of Monjwa Township, Sagaing Division, left for Japan by air this evening to attend the 10th Get-together of Students and Youth from Asia and the Pacific in Fukuoka, Japan.  The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Director General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win and officials, teachers and parents.

The delegation included fifth standard students Ma Jar Mon Lauk of Myitkyina Township BEHS No.1 of Kachin State, Maung Kyaw Phyo Hsint of Loikaw Township BEHS No.1 of Kayah State, Maung Nyo Zan of Sittway Township BEHS No.4 of Rakhine State, Maung Thant Zin Oo of Taungyi Township BEHS No.1 of Shan State, Ma Sein Le Khin of Minbu BEHS of Magway Division, Maung Zeya Kyaw of Dawai Township BEHS No.1 of Taninthayi Division, Ma Mya Myinzu of KhinU Township BEHS of Sagaing Division and Ma May Than Aung of Pathein Township BEHS No.1 of Ayeyawady Division, first year student Maung Myo Thant of Yangon Institute of Technology, high-school graduate Ma Khin Swe Thant of Pathein Township BEHS No.2 of Ayeyawady Division and ninth standard student Ma Ei Myat Nwe of Kyauktan Township BEHS No.1 of Yangon Division.

(7)   Special Long Cotton Cultivation Zone designated in Kyaukse Township

YANGON, 18 July - Chairman of Kyaukse District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein and officials inspected measures taken for reclamation of fallow and virgin land and long cotton cultivation in late monsoon on the Mount Baw in Kyaukse Township on 13 July morning. District Manager of Myanma Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise U Kyawt Win and officials briefed them on the tasks being undertaken

Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein cordially met the farmers and fulfilled the requirements.

Mount Baw, 1,200 feet high, 26 miles far from Kyaukse Township was designated as the Special Long Cotton Cultivation Zone by Myanma Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise. Altogether 2,000 acres of fallow and virgin land were reclaimed for long cotton cultivation and cotton has been cultivated on 1,115 acres in Mount Baw region.

(8)   Deputy Minister for Commerce inspects No.454 Rice Mill warehouses

YANGON, 18 July - Deputy Minister for Commerce Col Kyaw Shwe, accompanied by Managing Director U Saw Aung of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading and officials, arrived at No.454 Rice Mill in Pyay Township at yesterday morning.

The deputy minister inspected the rice mill and gave instructions on storage of paddy in warehouse, purchasing paddy, transportation, milling of paddy and distribution. He also inspected storage of groundnut in the warehouse.  The deputy minister then inspected storage of groundnut and rice in the godowns at the transportation centre.
 

They went to KyarO paddy purchase depot in Padaung Township and inspected storage of paddy and pulses and beans in three rice warehouses and one paddy warehouse.

The deputy minister and party proceeded to Hinthada Township, Ayeyawady Division.

(9)   Director-General of IPRD inspects offices in Yangon East District

YANGON, 18 July - Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department Lt-Col Chit Naing, accompanied by Acting Director (Admin) Maj Kyaw Zin Oo, Assistant Director (Admin) U Myint Swe and Assistant Director Thura U Swe Win, inspected library and office works, arrangements for staff welfare and wall magazine in Mingala Taungnyunt, Yankin, South Okkalapa, Thingangyun, Tarmway and Pazundaung Township IPRD offices this morning.

The Director-General gave instructions.
