(1) Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President of Republic of Iraq

YANGON, 17 July - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Saddam Hussein, President of the Republic of Iraq, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Iraq which falls on 17 July 1998.

(2) Deputy Prime Minister receives VP of Koortrade

YANGON. 16 July - Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Vice-President Mr Carmel Dahan of Koortrade Company of Israel at his office at 8 am today.

Present also were officials of the Government Office.

(3) Minister for A&I tours coffee farms in PyinOoLwin

YANGON, 16 July - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin. accompanied by Chairman of PyinOoLwin District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thaung Tin, departmental heads and officials, inspected land preparation for extension of coffee plantations around PyinOoLwin on 14 July.

At Pwetaung Coffee Farm, Managing Director of Myanma Farms Enterprise Thura U Maung Ko and officials briefed him on designation of land plots for establishment of coffee plantations in cooperation with district and township authorities, Forest Department and Settlement and Land Records Department, and programmes for cultivation this year.

The minister later inspected coffee nurslings, places designated for cultivation and the coffee museum, which displayed various coffee strains of some foreign countries.

Myanma Farms Enterprise is allocating land plots for establishment of coffee plantations at fertile places in PyinOoLwin. The permit is being issued to farmers at K 10,000 per acre, and the project is being implemented to build a coffee city there.

Altogether 7,842 acres have been reclaimed and 3 764 acres allotted so far.  The plants will be cultivated on 3,552 acres this year.  The minister and party later inspected Catimore coffee plants at Doekwin Coffee Farm, mushroom farms and Golden Lion Coffee Factory in PyinOoLwin and construction of Spray Dryer machine for production of instant coffee mix in Maha Aungmyay Township in Mandalay.

(4) Minister for Home Affairs receives lCRC officials

YANGON, 16 July - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing received Dr Markus Michael and Mr Toni Pfanner of International Committee of the Red Cross at his office at 3 pm today.

Present were Police Maj-Gen Soe Win of Myanmar Police Force, Deputy- Director- General U Saw Ngwe of Prisons Department and President of Myanmar Red Cross, Society Dr Hla Bu.

(5) Internet Technology Course opens

YANGON, 16 July - The opening ceremony of Internet Technology Course for Ministry of Commerce, sponsored by World Trade Organization, was held at Myanma Export & Import Services on Merchant Street this morning.

Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Khin Maung Oo and Manager Mr Jean Guy Carrier of World Trade Organization spoke on the occasion.

Altogether 30 trainees of the Office of the Strategic Studies, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Science and Technology, Institute of Computer Science and Technology, Ministry of Commerce and private companies attended the two-day course.

(6) 37 viss of opium seized in Mongkai

YANGON, 16 July - A team comprising members of Defence Services Intelligence Unit, Myanmar Police Force and departmental personnel, while discharging the duty at Mongkai checkpoint at 1:15 pm on 27 June, searched a suspicious cart driven by Chen Cha (a) Khin Sin, 60, son of U Zar Leng, Ward 1, Mongkai.  The team seized 37 packets of opium weighing 37 viss within the bags of bran onboard the cart.

According to the investigation, the team raided the house of Kaw Li Ya, son of U Hsan Lu, Ward 1, Mongkai, and seized a Dream motor-cycle 1 Ya/ 28734, five bicycles, three ticles of golden ornaments and an international cassette.  Kaw Li Ya, 40, owner of the opium, and three family members are absconding.

Action has been taken against the culprit under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Mongkai Police Station.

(7) Minister meets officials, locals in Bilin Township

YANGON, 16 July - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung met Tactical Operations Commander of No. 44 Light Infantry Division Col Toe Aung, agricultural officials and local villagers in Bilin Township on 14 July.  The minister- was accompanied by officials.

He discussed with them requirements for putting 500 acres of virgin land under sugarcane at the foot of Shweyaungpya Hill after being reclaimed, for welfare of the staff of Myanma Railways.

(8) Commander tours Waw Township

YANGON, 16 July-Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Tin Aye, accompanied by officials, oversaw repair of Mawa and Hsatthwachon bridges in Waw Township yesterday.  He gave instructions to meet set standards, to minimize loss and wastage and to complete the work as targeted.

The commander then attended a township level paddy transplanting competition in Waw Township and presented prizes to winning teams.

He also inspected repair and maintenance of Sittaung Canal, dikes, cultivation of monsoon paddy, Tawa Sluice Gate and Tawa Village Clinic and met local authorities.

The commander paid homage to Kyaikpadaing Pagoda in Kyaikpadaing Village.

(9) Paddy cultivation in Pathein Township inspected

YANGON, 16 July - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Thura Shwe Man, accompanied by officials, inspected paddy cultivation in Pyingadoogon and Phayagyigon villages in Pathein Township yesterday.

He cordially met farmers and explained to them programme for boosting per acre-yield, condition of agricultural loans and fertilizer availability and assistance to be provided.

The commander met trainees and instructors of Basic Accounting Course of Pathein District USDA and gave instructions.

(10) Chairman of Magway Division attends opening ceremony for Refresher Course for Agriculture Mechanization

YANGON, 16 July - The opening ceremony of Mechanical and Electrical Technician Course 4/5 and Refresher Course No. 1/98 for Maintenance of Agriculture Mechanization Department were held at the department on 13 July morning. Present were Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw, Chairman of Division Agriculture Coordination Committee and committee members, Deputy Director of Agriculture Mechanization Department and officials.

Chairman Col Thein Zaw and officials spoke on the occasion.

The Chairman and officials inspected planting trees and keeping them thriving and cultivation of monsoon sesanum and monsoon groundnut.

Col Thein Zaw and party also inspected pumping of water from Pahtanago and Myinkun creeks in the afternoon.

The commander cordially met the township departmental officials and villageselders and peasants and gave instructions.

(11) Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman receives Resident Representative of FAO

YANGON, 16 July - Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Brig-Gen Abel receives Resident Representative of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Dr Prem Nath, who had completed his tour of duty, at his office at 3 pm today.  They discussed cooperation matters between Myanmar and FAO.

Present also were officials concerned.

(12) Western Command Commander inspects construction of Kissapanadi Bridge

YANGON 16 July - Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, accompanied by the officials, arrived at the site of Kissapanadi Bridge Construction Project in Kyauktaw Township on 13 July evening.

At the project office, the commander met township level officials and gave instructions on timely completion of the construction works, worksite safety and situation of paddy cultivation, in the township.

T he commander inspected progress of Kissapanadi Bridge Project, rice and paddy kept in warehouses of Myanma Agriculture Produce Trading.

(13) Sale, distribution of fish meat coordinated

YANGON, 16 July - A coordination meeting on sale and distribution of fish and meat within Yangon City was held at the Fisheries Department on Sinmin Street, Ahlon Township, this afternoon as directed by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein clarified the directive of the Secretary-2 at the meeting.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Camp Commandant of Ministry of Defence Col Hla Aung Thein, officials of ministries and breeders and fishery entrepreneurs.

Director-General of Fisheries Department U Soe Win, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials took part in discussions on sale and distribution of fish and Managing Director of Livestock Breeding, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise Lt-Col Khin Maung Aye and entrepreneurs in discussions on sale and distribution of meat.
