(1)   Projects with assistance of UN agencies need to be tailored to meet national requirements and serve long-term interests of the nation and the people

YANGON, 6 July - A coordination meeting on the projects implemented in Myanmar with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme and UN agencies took place in the meeting hall of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army), Ministry of Defence, at 1:30 pm today and Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Labour Vice-Admiral Tin Aye, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director-General of State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein and officials.

(2)   Occurrence of crimes decline in first five months of 1998 Law enforcement authorities urged to lay emphasis on deterrence

YANGON, 6 July - A coordination meeting jointly organized by the Crime Reduction, Education and Information Committee and the Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development' Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Chairman of the Crime Reduction, Education and Information Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and members, Chairman of the Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee Vice- Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and members, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental heads, and chairmen and members of the subcommittees.

(3)   Deputy Prime Minister receives MD of Kerry investment Management Ltd

YANGON, 6 July - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director of Kerry Investment Management Ltd Mr David R Walton Masters and party of Hong Kong at this office this morning.

Present also were Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman MIC Secretary Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials of Myanmar Investment Commission Office.

(4)   Heroin seized in Namhkam

YANGON, 6 July - Heroin weighing 0.52864 kilo was seized from two persons near Shweli Bridge in Namhkam Township on 18 June.

Members of Defence Services, anti-drug squad and Myanmar Police Force searched the two persons, Yaw Pha Sai, 24, son of Yaw Chon Whet, Namphatkha village, Nashkam, and Yaw Pha Shwe, 25, son of Yaw Shawha, who was riding a motorcycle, at a check point near the bridge and found the heroin in their possession.

Action has been taken against the two.

(5)   Minister for Health attends opening ceremony of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital (Mandalay)

YANGON, 6 July - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Director-General of Health Department Dr Hla Myint, Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint, Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Dr Kyaw Myint Tun and Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe, attended the opening ceremony of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital (Mandalay) in Mandalay yesterday morning.

(6)   Over K 3m to build delivery room in Dalla

YANGON, 6 July - U Tun Aye, Daw Khin Myint and family of Mandalay Slipper shop, 343 Shwebontha Street, presented K 3 million at MMCWA in South Okkalapa to build a delivery room in Dalla Township, Yangon South District, today.

U Win Maung and Daw Hla Hla May also presented K 20,000.

Chairperson of Myanmar -Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe accepted the cash at MMCWA.  Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Khin Win Shwe accepted K 150,000 presented by U Myat Soe and Daw Thuza Nyunt and K 200,000 by Daw Khin Khin Swe.

Secretary of MMCWA Dr Nyo Nyo and executives, Chairman of Dalla Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Shwe and Secretary U Than Kyaing, Township Health Officer Dr Marn Kyint Paw, Chairperson of Township MCWA Daw Tin Tin Kyu and executives and donors were also present.

(7)   Nigerian military delegation arrives

YANGON, 6 July - A Nigerian military delegation led by Maj-Gen Jl Igoche of National War College of Nigeria arrived here this evening.  The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung and senior military officers, Military Attache Col FB Hebiti and Consul Mr EH Abba of Embassy of Nigerian and other officials.

(8)   National Training Workshop on Project Design and Management for Drug Control begins

YANGON, 6 July - Under the Memorandum of Understanding for Subregional Collaboration in Drug Control, a National Training Workshop on Project Design and Management for Drug Control began at the Central Hotel this morning.

Present were Deputy Minister for Home Affairs BrigGen Thura Myint Maung and officials of the Ministry of Defence, the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control, Information and Public Relations Department, Department for the Progress of Border Areas and National Races, Myanmar Agricultural Services, Health Department, Social Welfare Department, Basic Education Department, Border Areas Development Association and Myanmar Anti-drug Association.

Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanma Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win. Director of the Office of UNDCP for East Asia region and the Pacific Mr Christian Kornevall and Residential Representative of UNDCP Mr Richard Dickins spoke on the occasion.

The objective of the training is to strengthen the capacities of the signatory countries of the Memorandum of Understanding for Subregional Cooperation on Drug Control to actively contribute to the planning and the implementation of the subregional and the national drug control projects.

The training specifically aims at improving skills of the participants on project design and management for drug control. The training workshop will cover project identification, project formulation and appraisal as well as project implementation and management.

Over thirty national staff members at management level of the counterpart agencies and associated institutions in the central and provincial government will benefit from this training workshop, which will be conducted by a UNDCP team of international consultants and experts.

The workshop will be held till 12 July.

(9)   Minister for Industry-l receives Ambassador of Egypt

YANGON, 6 July - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Ambassador of Egypt Dr Farouk Raid Hassan Mabrouk at his office at 3 pm today. The minister also received Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines Mrs Sonia Cataumber Brady at 4 pm today.

Present also were Deputy Ministers for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Col Than Zin, directors-general and managing directors of the ministry.

(10)   MMCWA Chairpersons gave lecture at USDA course

YANGON, 6 July - Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Head of the Group of Protection of Violence Against Women under the Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Khin Win Shwe lectured at Basic Management Multiplier Course No.1/98 for Executives sponsored by North Okkalapa Township Union Solidarity and Development Association this morning.

Present also Were Secretary of North Okkalapa Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Soe and member U Thet Lin, Secretary of Township USDA U Thein Tun and executives, Course in-Charge U Myint Soe, Course Supervisor U Kyaw Kyaw Soe, Head of Township Health Department Dr Myint Myint Nwe and officials.

Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe lectured on objectives, set-up, social activities and future tasks of MMCWA and Dr Khin Win Shwe on endeavours of MMCWA for the development of women and women's affairs.

Then, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Dr Khin Win Shwe cordially conversed with trainees.

Later, The fourth Waso robe offering ceremony sponsored by North Okkalapa Township USDA was held.

U Thein Tun and executives, ward organizers and executives and trainees offered Waso robes and alms to Sayadaws led by Shwe-UMin Tawyataik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kosalla.

Then, merits gained were shared.
