(1)   Ramayana to be included in drama event of Sixth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition

YANGON, 21 June - A coordination. meeting for holding the Sixth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition was held at the Ministry of Culture today with an address by Patron of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Sixth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, senior military officers, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department, Chairman of Myanmar Thabin, Music and Motion Picture Asiayons and doyen artistes.

(2)   Minister for Industry-1 inspects factories in Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions

YANGON, 21 June - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Industry- 1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, Managing Director of Myanma Textile Industries U San Kyi, Managing Director of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries U Zaw Sein Win, Managing Director of Myanma Foodstuff Industries U Kyaw Myint and officials, met factory manager and service personnel of Sagaing Textile Mill at the mill yesterday afternoon.

MD U San Kyi and Factory Manager U Aung Win briefed the minister on capacity of the mill, production and distribution of the mill and trade matter.

Minister U Aung Thaung gave instructions on running of the mill with full capacity to provide the needs of the people and the State and health and welfare of staff.

He inspected the charts of production, distribution, trade and raw materials available and looked into the requirements.

The minister and party also inspected weaving section and gave suggestions.

The minister and party this morning went to Soap Factory No.3 on Yadanabon Street in Daywun Ward in Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay Division, this morning.

At the factory hall, the minister attended to the needs of officials.

He inspected production of the factory and factory compound and gave instructions on production of quality soap, cleanliness of the factory and staff welfare.

The minister and party proceeded to Paleik Textile Mill in Sintgaing Township, Mandalay Division, where he met factory manager and officials.

Minister U Aung Thaung and officials inspected products of the mill, cotton processing, weaving section, finishing section and printing work at the mill and gave suggestions.

Then, the minister and party proceeded to construction project of Athonelone Cement plant on Shwesayan Village in Patheingyi Township.

Officials briefed the minister on progress of work.

The minister inspected of the cement plant being under construction.

(3)   Book Fair hails MWJA conference

YANGON, 21 June - Hailing the Second Conference of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, a book fair organized by the Ministry of Information, opened at the office of Yangon Division Union Solidarity and Development Association at the corner of West Race Course Road and Saya San Road in Bahan Township this morning.

Present were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, officials of departments and enterprises under the ministry, advisers at the ministry, Chairman of MWJA U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) and CEC members, members of MWJA, EC members of Yangon Division USDA, guests and USDA members.
The deputy minister and U Myo Thant formally opened the book fair.

The deputy minister and party observed documentary photos of MWJA meeting, photos of ceremony to pay homage to literary doyens and prize presentation of National Literary Award and Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award, National Mottos, Literary and Photo Contests and photos of Senior General Than Shwe and literary doyens and books and other periodicals published by Ministry of Religious Affairs, Myawady Literature House, News and Periodicals Enterprise, Printing and Publishing Enterprises Information and Public Relations Department, Universities Historical Research Department, Sarpay Beikman and Myanmar Language Commission, copies of Encyclopedia Myanmanica and books of famous writers.

The book fair is open to the public from 9 am to 7 pm till 25 June.

Admission is free.

(4)   1998 Olympic Day Commemorative Shooting Contest begins

YANGON, 21 June - A shooting contest to mark the 1998 Olympic Day was held at Okkala Shooting Range of Myanmar Shooting Federation this morning.

Present were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig- Gen Sein Win, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, Director of Ordnance Col Chit Than, Deputy Director Col Win Than, Officer on Special Duty at the SPED Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau, Secretary of MSF Lt-Col Thant Swe and officials.

Brig-Gen Sein Win spoke on the occasion.

Then, Brig-Gen Sein Win and officials formally opened the contest.

The contest will be held till 23 June.

(5)   Cultivation of paddy discussed in Htantabin

YANGON, 21 June - Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Tin Aye, accompanied by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni, Chairman of Toungoo District Peace and Development Council and members of District Agriculture Supervisory Committee, arrived at the Town Hall of Htantabin Township Development Affairs Department on 19 June. The commander discussed effective measures to be undertaken for development of agriculture, cultivation of full acreage in the township, making field trips, boosting per acre yield and preparations for double cropping with regional authorities and farmers.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council reported on arrangements for cultivation of monsoon paddy and other crops and reclamation of fallow and virgin lands.

The commander and party inspected pumping water project from Sittaung River in Seikkyi Village and canals.

The 1,150-foot canal was constructed at a cost of K 365,500 for flood prevention. It can irrigate 550 acres of summa paddy and beans and pulses.

The commander inspected Htantabin Township Information and Public Relations Department.

(6)   Deputy Minister for Health leaves for Cuba

YANGON, 21 June - Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo left here by air this morning for Cuba to attend Meeting of Health Ministers from Non-Aligned Movement member countries to be held on 25 and 26 June in Havana.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner, heads of department of the Ministry of Health and officials.

(7)   SRV Dy Premier and delegation arrive

YANGON, 21 June - At the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, the Vietnamese Government Delegation led by Mr Nguyen Manh Cam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam arrived here by air this evening.

They were welcomed at the airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Myanmar Ambassador to Vietnam U Khin Soe, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of Vietnam to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dan Khoa and diplomats of the Vietnamese Embassy.

(8)   Monepaw gets TV retransmission station

YANGON, 21 June - The TV retransmission station of Monepaw has been broadcasting Myanma Television programmes beginning 10 June morning in Monepaw, Muse Township, Shan State (North).

The station was built with the funds of Development of Border Areas and National Races Department according to the Work Programme for Implementation of Development of Border Areas and National Races with the supervision of Myanma Radio and Television.

(9)   Three fire engines for Chin State

YANGON, 21 June - Chin State Peace and Development Council handed over fire engines to Chin State Fire Services Department on the lawns in front of the office of Chin State Peace and Development Council on 16 June morning.

Chairman of Chin State Peace and Development Council Officiating Haka Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Zaw Win spoke on the occasion. Then, Lt-Col Zaw Win handed over three fire engines and related documents to U Phone Ar in charge of Chin State Fire Services Department.

(10)  Art and Sculptures Exhibition extended till 28 June

YANGON, 21 June - The last date for Art and Sculptures Exhibition arranged by Myanmar Artistes and Artisans Asiayon (Central) with the leadership of the Ministry of Culture will be extended to 28 June (Sunday) from a previous last date of 21 June.

(11)  Staff Officer of PD leaves for Bangkok

YANGON, 21 June - U Win Myint, Staff Officer of the Population Department of the Ministry of Immigration and Population, left for Bangkok by air this morning to attend Inter-Country Training Course on Consolidation and Repackaging of Population Information sponsored by UNESCO to be held in Bangkok from 22 June to 3 July.
