(1) Deputy PM arrives back from ASEAN Joint Investment Promotion Event

YANGON, 17 June - Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin with Secretary of MIC and Minister at the Office of State Peace and Development Council Chairman Brig-Gen Maung Maung and Joint Secretary of MIC U Maung Maung Yi as members arrived back here by air this evening after attending ASEAN Joint Investment Promotion Event held in Tokyo.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, officials of the Japanese Embassy and MIC office and relatives.

(2) Director of Cuba Institute of Friendship with Nationalities arrives

YANGON, 17 June - At the invitation of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Director Ms Alicia Elvira Corredera Morales and Mr Roberto Felipe Mackchaser Siveright of Cuba Institute of Friendship with Nationalities (ICAP) arrived here by air this morning.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein, Yangon Division USDA executives U Tha Win and U Tin Maung Win, Head of Office of the USDA Headquarters U Win Hlaing and Deputy Director U Myo Myat of the Ministry of Forestry.

The visiting delegation called on Secretary-General of USDA Minister for Education U Than Aung at the Headquarters of USDA in the afternoon. They discussed promotion of friendship, youth solidarity and cooperation between the two countries.

Present also were USDA CEC members Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe and Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein.

In the evening, the Cuban delegation called on USDA CEC member Minister for
Forestry U Aung Phone at his office.

(3) 1998 World Olympic Day commemorative Youth Golf Tourney begins

YANGON, 17 June - The opening ceremony of 1998 World Olympic Day commemorative Youth Golf Tourney, sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation, Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd, Life Style, Sun Far Travels and Tours Co Ltd, Billion, Olympia, Star Ice Cream, Wilson, Rapier, Toppro and Soft Guide Computer Centre, was held at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon at 7 am today.

The ceremony was attended by Secretary-General of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of the Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, vice-president of the MGF U Tha Tun Aung, General-Secretary U Aung Kyi, executives, golfers and spectators.

First, President of MGF Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Col Hla Myint Kyaw, and MGF executive U Ko Ko Lay launched the opening ceremony.

Top three of the under 12 Class were Phyo Kyaw Kyaw with 40 strokes, Naing Naing Lin with 42 and Myo Min Htwe with 47.

In 13-15 Class, Kyaw Swa Win led with 80 strokes, Thet Zaw Htwe was second with 81, and Myo Paing Win with 82.

Top three of 16-18 Class were Myanma selected golfer Win Htwe Hlaing with 80 strokes, Zaw Zin Win with 83 and Myint Zaw with 85.

The tourney continues tomorrow.

(4) Office of East Yangon District Women's Affairs Advisory and Education Work Committee opens

YANGON, 17 June - Office of the East Yangon District Women's Affairs Advisory and Education Work Committee was opened at the Yangon East District Information and Public Relations Department Office in Thingangyun Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were leader of the Committee for Protecting Women against Violence of the National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Khin Win Shwe and committee members, the chairperson and members of Yangon Division Women's Affairs Committee, members of Yangon Division and Yangon East District Women's Affairs Committees, Chairman of Yangon East District Peace an Development Council Lt-Col Aye Lwin, the chairman of Township Peace and Development Council and others. Dr Khin Win Shwe and leader of Committee for Protecting Women against Violence of Yangon Division Women's Affairs Committee Daw Marlar Tint formally opened the new office building.

Dr Khin Win Shwe delivered the opening address.  Next, Chairman of Yangon Division Women' s Affairs Committee Commissioner of the Division General Administration Department U Kan Myint gave suggestions on women's affairs. Chairman of Yangon East District Women's Affairs Committee District Commissioner U Nyan Win reported on the work done in connection with women's affairs. Duties were then assigned to District Staff Officer Daw Yi Yi Mar as leader and five members to run the Women ' s Affairs Advisory and Education Work Committee.

The office will remain open from 10 am to noon every Thursday.

(5) Minister for L&F receives Executive Chairman of Halim Mazmin

YANGON, 17 June - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein received Executive Chairman Mr Dato Halim Mohammad, who is a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Malaysia, and party of Halim Mazmin Berhad at his office this afternoon.

Present were Deputy Minister U Aung Thein, Director-General U Soe Win of Fisheries Department, Director-General U Maung Maung Nyunt of Livestock and Veterinary Department and officials.

(6) Commander meets township officials in DaikU, Nyaunalaybin, Kyauktada

YANGON, 17 June - Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Tin Aye met authorities and officials of Township Agriculture Supervisory Committee and Township Development Committee of DaikU Township in the Kawliya Hall in DaikU on 13 June morning.

He gave instructions on monsoon paddy cultivation, preparation for cultivation of four main crops, building of rural roads and greening of the area. The commander also met authorities and officials of Township Agriculture Supervisory Committee and Township Development Committee of Nyaunglaybin and Kyauktaga townships and gave instructions on land reclamation work, water supply for monsoon paddy and crops cultivation, collection of data on cultivated area and development and greening of rural region.

(7) Basic Management Multiplier Course for USDA Executives begins in Kyimyindine Township

YANGON, 17 June - New office building of Kyimyindine Township Union Solidarity and Development Association was opened in conjunction with commencement of Basic Management Multiplier Course for USDA Executives No.3/98 at the building this morning.

Present on the occasion were members of the USDA Secretariat Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein and Mayor U Ko Lay, Central Executive Committee member Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe, Commander of No.3 Military Region Lt-Col Win Maung, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein, Chairman of Kyimyindine Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Soe, Division, District and Township USDA executives, instructors and trainees.

First, U Khin Maung Thein, U Ko Lay and U Than Shwe formally opened the building.

Speaking on the occasion, U Khin Maung Thein said the trainees are to try to become good association members as well as good citizens. He advised them not to be complacent with what is gained from the course but to carry on studying and searching for knowledge by reading books. He urged them to work for the progress of the nation and the association.

Afterwards, Secretary of the Township USDA accepted donations presented by well-wishers of Kyimyindine Township. The ministers conversed with the trainees.

(8) Minister for Energy receives Ambassador of Thailand

YANGON, 17 June - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi received Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak at his office at 9 am today.

Also present were Deputy Minister U Tin Tun and Director-General U Soe Myint of the Energy Planning Department.

(9) Amphetamine, opium seized in Taunggyi

YANGON, 17 June - A combined group concluding members of Defence Services Intelligence Unit, Taunggyi Special Anti-Drug Squad and No 1 Police Station of Taunggyi Township, acting on a tip-off, raided Taungchay Inn in Thittaw Ward, Taunggyi Township, at 5.30 pm on 6 June. The authorities seized 30 tablets of orange colour Amphetamine weighing 0.002 kilos packed by plastic bag hidden in the pocket of the shirt which was owned by Aik Sun (a) Aik Sam Sein, 38, son of U Si Aung, of No 34, Kyauktalon street, No.2 region of Thittaw Ward, Taunggyi Township.  Moreover, the group seized 40 balls of black opium weighing 0.008 kilos hidden in his chest of drawers and K 16,630.

Action is taken against the culprits under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Taunggyi Police Station No.1.
