Brig-Gen Abel said there were some doubts about the development and stability of economies of Asian and South-East Asian nations due to current financial turmoil, saying he will explain the past, the present and the future of Asia and Myanmar, for assessment in three sectors.

For economic reasons, Asian nations were occupied as Western colonies by Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Britain beginning l5th Century, he recalled. Natural resources and labour of Asian nations including Myanmar were exploited for the benefit of the colonialists, he added. Patriotism has been revitalized in the colonized nations based on their ardent will to regain independence and to win economic progress, he recounted.

At present, the world is facing financial problems, which are also affecting Myanmar, he said. There was a 50 percent drop indirect investments from South-East Asian nations to Myanmar, he stated. But Myanmar, depending on her own arrangements, could manage to maintain her trade with these nations, he added.

Myanmar should closely watch the situation as currency and financial stability has not been restored in Asia, he noted, expecting it will take two to three years to solve this problem.

All nations should build their own future, he stated, saying Myanmar will cooperate with other nations to control and deter acts that may threaten world peace.
