(1)   State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Poland

YANGON, 3 May - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Aleksander Kwasniewski, President of the Republic of Poland, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Poland which falls on 3 May 1998.

(2)   Secretary-l oversees Airport Reception Hall construction

YANGON, 2 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this morning inspected construction site of Reception Hall at Yangon Intentional Airport and gave suggestions to officials.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council arrived at the construction site of Reception Hall at 8.30 am today.

They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, heads of department and officials.

The Secretary-1 was conducted round the site by officials, and he then gave instructions to officials.

(3)   Ananda Theindawgyi, Shwe Kyaungdawgyi consecrated, foundation laid for pilgrims hostel in Lumbini Park

YANGON, 2 May - The ceremonies to consecrate Ananda Theindawgyi, share merits for completion of Shwe Kyaungdawgyi and Ananda Theindawgyi and lay foundation for construction of hostel for pilgrims was held at Myanmar Monastery in Lumbini Park, Nepal, on 29 and 30 April.

The ceremonies were attended by three members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Myanmar delegation members, Myanmar Ambassador to Nepal U Tin Latt and staff, Bodh Gaya pilgrims and well-wishers from Myanmar, officials of the committee for construction of Lumbini buildings and guests.

Myanmar delegation led by Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa left here by special flight on 29 April.  They stopped over at Sittway.

Deputy Commander of Western Command Brig-Gen Aung Thein and military officers welcomed them at the airport and presented offertories to the Sayadaws who were on board the special flight.

The delegation left Sittway for Calcutta by special aircraft at 9 am and arrived there at 9.15 am local time.

They flew from Calcutta to Kathmandu, Nepal, and arrived there at 1.45 pm local time.

They were welcomed by Ambassador U Tin Latt and staff and officials of the committee for construction of Lumbini buildings.

They next flew on to Hawa Airport and arrived there at 3.35 pm local time.

They left the airport by car and reached Myanmar Monastery in Lumbini Park at 4.30 pm.

Altogether 53 Buddhist monks from India and Nepal led by three members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee consecrated Ananda Theindawgyi.

The foundation laying ceremony for construction of a hostel for pilgrims was held at Lumbini Myanmar Monastery at 5.45 pm local time on 30 April.

It was attended by the three members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, 17 members of the Sangha from Lumbini region, Myanmar delegation members led by Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, the Myanmar Ambassador to Nepal and embassy staff, devotees and well-wishers.

Member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Khanticara administered the Nine Precepts.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa placed the casket studded with gems at the foundation precisely at 6 hours 32 minutes 15 seconds.

After the cornerstones had been laid, the minister laid the stone inscription at the foundation.

At 7.30 am, the Sayadaws consecrated the Buddha images at Ananda Theindawgyi and Shwe Kyaungdawgyi.

The ceremony to share merits for completion of Ananda Theindawgyi, Shwe Kyaungdawgyi and other donations made by the State Peace and Development Council and well-wishers was held at 8.30 am.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, the Ambassador, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana U Sann Lwin and Deputy Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint accepted the donation for Lumbini Sasanika buildings.

Maj-Gen Sein Htwa met officials and personnel undertaking the task to construct Sasanika buildings in Lumbini Park.

He heard reports on donations, utilization of funds and progress of work in construction of religious buildings.

The minister and party donated Pitakat Treatises (English) to Nepali Nun Daw Thudhammawady of Nepali Nunnery in Lumbini Park and also to German Monk U Vimaka of Panditayama Myanmar Monastery in Lumbini Park.

They next toured the Lord Buddha's birth place, where King Asoka built a stone pillar, the stone statue portraying Queen Maya delivering Son Buddha, the stupa brick structures to remember Son Buddha Making seven steps after being delivered and the lake where the washing was done for the Mother Queen and the Son.

On 1 May, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, accompanied by Ambassador U Tin Latt, Director-General U Sann Lwin and Deputy Director-General Dr Myo Myint, called on Premier of Nepal Mr Girda Prasad Koirala.

They arrived back here at 6.16 pm yesterday.

(4)   Construction of buildings in Thayettaw Kyaungtaik, Maha Theindawgyi making progress

YANGON, 2 May - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Hmankyaung in Thayettaw Kyaungtaik, Lanmadaw Township, and new building of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Pabedan Township this morning and gave instructions to officials.

Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, the Secretary-2 arrived at Hmankyaung at 9 am today.

He paid homage to Presiding Sayadaw of Hmankyaung Agga Maha Saddhmma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pinnajota and Supplicated on construction of four-storey building.

Then, the Secretary-2 inspected construction of four-storey new building in Hmankyaung and gave instructions to officials.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Pabedan Township where he inspected construction of the eight-storey new building of the Sarthintaik.

Then, the Secretary-2 paid obeisance to Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Kumara and supplicated on construction of the eight-storey new building.

(5)   Minister for A&I visits harvesting of summer paddy model plots in Hlegu

YANGON, 2 May - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung, the managing director of Myanma Agriculture Service and the directors-general of Settlement and Land Records Department and Agricultural Mechanization Department inspected harvesting of summer paddy on the model plot in Ngamoeyeik irrigated area near Dayebo Village in Hlegu Township this morning.

The Director of Yangon Division Irrigation Department reported on water supply to Ngamoeyeik irrigated area for cultivation of summer paddy, Head of Division Settlement and Land Records Department on cultivation of summer paddy in Yangon Division and Hlegu Township, harvesting of model plot and per acre yield and Division Manager of MAS on findings on per acre yield, points for boosting the yield and review on use of fertilizer and its reaction.

Farmers reported on cost and profit in cultivation of summer and monsoon paddy, use of quality strains and pumping water for farmland in higher ground.

The minister discussed multiple cropping, irrigation from reservoir, systematic use of irrigation, abidance of irrigation law, digging of minor canals, measures for double cropping, individual maintenance of farmland and cooperation in application of agricultural methods with farmers.

He then observed the steps to take sample yield and calculate, the per acre yield, humidity and weight harvesting of model plots.

The minister and party inspected harvesting with the use of machines in summer paddy fields near Yemon Village.

They went to Laydaunkkan Livestock Breeding Station of Myanma Farms Enterprise in Dagon Myothit (South) where Managing Director U Maung Ko and officials reported on production and breeding of fresh water and sea fish and prawn and poultry farming.

Next, the minister inspected poultry farms and gave instructions.

The minister and party also discussed planting of vegetables and sale and welfare for service personnel at Aungmyeya Farm with officials.

(6)   New office for Yangon South District USDA

YANGON, 2 May - A new office building of Yangon South District Union Solidarity and Development Association was opened in Aungchantha Ward, Thanlyin, this morning.

Present were members of the Central Executive Committee of USDA Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe and Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Commander of regional battalion Lt-Col Zaw Weik, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and executives, Secretary of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Maj Chit Nyunt, Deputy Commissioner U Tin Myint, departmental officials, USDA secretaries, executives and members of Yangon South District and its townships and guests.

Secretary of Yangon South District USDA U Aung Myint formally opened the office.

Minister U Than Shwe spoke.

Later, CEC members and guests inspected the building.

(7)   Railroads and bridges inspected in Bago Division

YANGON, 2 May - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin, Managing Director of Myanma Railways U Kyaw Hsan and officials met service personnel of MR at Bago Station on 1 May.

U Pan Aung inspected construction site of Bago Division Union Solidarity and Development Association.  He then met EC members of Division, District and Township USDA.

He spoke of the need to make efforts for success of the functions of the association, selection of right EC members and nurturing them to be patriotic.

The Minister inspected the site for construction of sleeper factory near Phayagyi Station.  He met officials and service personnel at the station.

He then gave instructions on maintenance of Railroad construction of building management and tasks to be undertaken.

The minister inspected railroad and bridges between Phayagyi and Pyondaza and met MR personnel.

On his way to Yangon, the minister inspected railroad and bridges along Pyondaza Yangon section.

(8)   Minister for Mines visits Salt mill

YANGON, 2 May - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Salt and Marine Chemical Enterprise U Saw Win, visited the salt mill in Thakayta Township this morning.

After inspecting the salt mill, he gave instructions on sufficient production of iodine salt, production of salt to be exported which meet the required standard, minimizing loss and wastage and producing salt to exceed the target.

(9)   Management Course No 6 for USDA Executives opened in Kyauktan

YANGON, 2 May - The opening ceremony of Management Course No 6 for USDA Executives, sponsored by Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, was held at Township USDA office in Kyauktan Township, Yangon South District, this morning.

CEC member of USDA Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint attended and delivered an address at the ceremony.

Present also were CEC member of USDA U Than Shwe, Secretaries and EC members of Division, District and Township USDAs, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, course supervisors and trainees.

Then, CEC member Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint delivered an addresses.

Well-wishers donated cash to Kyauktan Township USDA.

Today's donations were K 20,000 by Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council, K 10,000 by Township All private Bus line Control Committee, K 10,000 by Township USDA bus line control committee and K 10,000 by powerboats supervisory committee.

Secretary of Township USDA U Hla Win accepted the donations.

Altogether 44 trainees attended the two-week course.

(10)  Repaved streets put back into service in Dawei

YANGON, 2 May - Repaved streets were put back into service in Dawei, Taninthayi Division, on 30 April morning.

Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung formally opened the streets.

They were Hsinseik Street, Padaukshwewa Street, Myananda Street and Mahadewi Fourth Lane.

The commander also formally opened Dawei-Taungthonlon-Myitta Road, which is 12 feet wide and 6 miles long.

The road was built at a cost of K 9 million contributed by the locals.

In 1997-98 fiscal year, 25 streets were put back into service in Dawei. They were built at a cost of nearly K 7 million-over K 4.7 million provided by Township Development Committee and over K 2 million contributed by the public.

(11)  Commander tours Kyaukpyu, Yanbye

YANGON, 2 May - Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, together with officials, met members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils and officials of Myanma Agriculture Service, Irrigation Department and Settlement and Land Records Department in the meeting hall of Kyaukpyu District Peace and Development Council on 28 April afternoon.

He discussed purchase of paddy, cultivation of paddy and other crops for next year and availability of water for cultivation.

On 29 April afternoon, the commander and party inspected the branch of Myanma Economic Bank and the office of the township judge and gave instructions.

The commander met members of Township peace and Development Council and departmental personnel in the hall of Yanbye Town ship Peace and Development Council.

Later, he inspected construction site of a new office building of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association and 50-acre rubber plantation near Yanbye.
