(1) Successful hosting of 24th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and Pacific in Myanmar enhances stance of nation, people's dignity

YANGON, 1 May - A meeting was held this morning at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation to assess the results in hosting the 24th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific in Yangon, with an address by Patron of the Central Committee for Organizing the Conference Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu. Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, senior military officers, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of departments and members of the work committee and subcommittees were also present.

(2) Self-reliance tube-well, bridge commissioned into service in North Okkalapa

YANGON, 1 May - Tube-well No 1 and Emerald Garden Agriculture Bridge, which were built on self-reliance in North Okkalapa Township, were commissioned into service today.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials, and district, township and ward authorities.

Chairman of Ward Peace and Development Council U Toe Kywe explained sinking of the tube-well and building of the bridge on self-reliance for development of the ward and Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Khin spoke about township development activities.

Col Maung Pa and Col Thaik Tun also spoke.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave suggestions on sufficient water supply, improvement of roads and cooperation of departments, ward dwellers and well-wishers for development of wards and townships.

The Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council, the Township Development Committee Executive and the Chairman of Ward Peace and Development Council formally opened the tube-well and the bridge.

(3) Families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) donate dry rations to Maha Mitzimayonkyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik

YANGON, 1 May - Families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) donated dry rations and edible oil to Maha Mitzimayonkyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Thanlyin Township at the Sarthintaik this morning in conjunction with merit sharing ceremony for completion of Thanpatti Mula Soonsarkyaung.

Present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, ministers senior Tatmadaw officers, Vice-Mayor, departmental officials, well-wishers and guests.

Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Mitzimayonkyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik (Visaa Dhammacariya Digavanaca Pitakataya Paragu) Bhaddanta Pannavabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

(4) Archery team wins two gold, two silver in Bangkok International Invitational Tournament

YANGON, 1 May - The Myanmar archery team which won two gold and two silver in the International Invitational Archery Tournament held in Bangkok arrived back here by air yesterday evening.

The tournament was held in Bangkok from 26 to 29 April.

The Myanmar team led by Police Lt-Col Sai Aung Min included Dr Myat Thura Soe and U Go Yin as managers, U Hlaing (YCDC), Kyaw Min Han (YCDC), Nyi Nyi Tun (Defence) and Khin Zaw (A&I) as men's archers and Khin Than Nwe (YCDC), Thi Thi Win and Myat Thuza Myint (Home) and Nilar Oo (PBANRDA) as women's archers.

President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe, who had received an honorary doctorate from Washington University, was with the team and arrived back here on the same flight.

They were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, OSD at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau and officials.

The two gold were won by Khin Than Nwe in women's single and silver each in men's and women's team events.

Myanmar, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Bhutan, Vietnam and Malaysia took part in it.

(5) Minister oversees National Races Village Project

YANGON, 1 May - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt visited the National Races Village Project near Thanlyin Bridge this afternoon.

He was welcomed there by Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin, directors-general and officials.

The deputy minister and officials reported on progress of work with charts.

The minister called on officials to open Myanma traditional handicraft exhibitions, keep traditional utensils of national races after building the national races village, make pleasant and beautiful the bank of Bago River east of the national races village and matters related to recreation of tourists and the people.

Later, the minister inspected the project.

(6) Minister for Transport oversees Kengtung, Tachilek airports

YANGON, 1 May - Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe inspected Kengtung and Tachilek airports in Shan State today.

Accompanied by Director-General U Win Maung of Department of Civil Aviation and officials, the minister first arrived at Kengtung Airport where they were welcomed by Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Deputy Commander Col Myint Swe, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Zaw and departmental officials.

In the lounge of the airport, Senior Engineer U Thaung Htay briefed the minister on extension of the runway.

After hearing his report, the minister gave necessary instructions on the project.

He then toured the project area and instructed officials to stock construction materials and fuel for the monsoon and to carry Out work with added momentum in the open season.

(7) Commander tours Yangon South District

YANGON, 1 May - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected all-round renovation of Kyaikhmawwun Yayle Pagoda, prawn breeding stations, Kyauktan People's Hospital and briquette plants in Yangon South District today.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than arrived at Kyaikhmawwun Yayle Pagoda in Kyauktan Township at 7.15 am.

Later, he paid homage to the pagoda.

Chairman of Pagoda Board of Trustees U Hlaing and members reported on all-round renovation and construction of Shin Upagupta Shrine.

The commander gave instructions, and signed in the Visitor's Book.

Afterwards, the commander inspected the construction work and renovation, and donated K 50,000 towards the pagoda fund.

Then, the commander visited prawn breeding stations jointly undertaken by the Fisheries Department and Super Group Ltd in Chaungwa Village-tract and Kyauktan Township.

Next, the commander went to Kyauktan People's Hospital.

He inspected patient wards, medicine storage, X-ray unit, laboratory and operation theatre.

The commander later inspected Yeyetauk Briquette Plant of regional battalion in Thanlyin, the new office building of Yangon South District Union Solidarity and Development Association to be opened on 2 May and the briquette plant of Yangon South District USDA.

After that, in the hall of Yangon South District GEC in Thanlyin, he met departmental officials and executives of USDA of Thanlyin, Kyauktan, Khayan, Thongwa Townships.

He gave instructions on the purchase of paddy, planting trees on both sides of roads in the townships, making arrangements for the convenience of transport when basic education schools open, nurturing members of USDA, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade to be qualified ones and enforcement of law and order.

(8) Lao Minister for Home Affairs concludes visit

YANGON, 1 May - Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Asang Laoly of Laos and goodwill delegation, who visited here at the invitation of Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, left here by air this morning.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, directors-general of the ministry, Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and embassy staffs.

(9) Minister inspects National Swimming Pool, Olympic Hotel

YANGON, 1 May - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win arrived at the National Swimming Pool on U Wisara Road this morning.

He was welcomed there by Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials.

Chairman of Yangon Swimming Club U Nyan Tun and executives reported on arrangements for Yangon Swimming Club to be opened on 7 May morning.

The minister gave instructions.

Afterwards, the minister and party inspected preparations of YSC at the NSP.

The minister and party later went to the Olympic Hotel.

The minister inspected the hotel and gave instructions.
