(1) General Maung Aye tours projects in Shan State (East)

YANGON, 31 Mar - After inspecting the Zawgyi Dam Hydel Power Project in Yaksauk Township, Shan State, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in Chief (Army) General Maung Aye Left for Kengtung in eastern Shan State by Tatmadaw flight yesterday afternoon.

He was accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, senior officers of Tatmadaw (Army Navy and Air) and deputy ministers.

They were welcomed at Kengtung Airport by Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein and military officers, departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and families of Tatmadaw members.

(2) Chairman of MIC receives Mitsui & Co

YANGON, 31 Mar - Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received General Manager Mr Susumu Takaku and party of Mitsui Co Ltd of Japan at his office at 10 am today.

Present also were Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and officials.

(3) MHI's motor workshop inspected

YANGON, 31 Mar - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and officials inspected motor workshop of Myanma Heavy Industries in Htaukkyant this morning.

Manager U Min Swe reported on assembling of car body and power tillers and future tasks.

The minister inspected warehouse, compound and workshop. He then gave instructions on cleanliness, production of radio and cars after proper tests.

The minister went to the store house of Technical Services in Hmawby.

Deputy Director U Ohn Myint and Assistant Director U Soe Win of TS reported on storage of spare parts, electrical goods, storage of construction materials, production of nails and security.

Managing Director U Ye Tun took part in the discussions.

The minister then inspected materials and maintenance of machinery.

(4) Global strategy on eradication of poppy cultivation within ten years focused

YANGON, 31 Mar - The Seminar on Alternative Development jointly sponsored by the Japanese Government, Central Committee S.-r Drug Abuse Control of Myanmar and United Nations Drug Control Programme commenced at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road here at 9 am today.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Acting Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, deputy ministers, Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Head of Department of the Office of the Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein, heads of departments, advisers, signatory nations to the Memorandum of Understanding on collective drug control in the ASEAN region, delegates of donor nations, Ambassadors and embassy officials led by Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham, Resident Representatives of the UN Agencies in Yangon, the Patron of Foreign Correspondents Club and members, personnel of the non-governmental organizations and guests.

(5) Minister for Health receives INCB officials

YANGON, 31 Mar - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received member of International Narcotics Control Board of Vienna Mr Diljan Khan and INCB Second Secretary Mr A Fujino at his office at 1 pm today.

Present also were Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo and officials of the ministry.

(6) Minister for Construction tours Kachin State

YANGON, 31 Mar - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun arrived in Myitkyina on 29 March.

The minister was welcomed by Deputy Commander of Northern Command Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Kachin State Superintending Engineer U Tun Tin of Public Works, Project Superintending Engineer Bala Min Htin Myitkyina Bridge across Ayeyawady River and officials.

U Tun Tin reported on construction of roads and bridges in Kachin State.

The minister called for completion of work as scheduled, supervision by officials at different levels, fire prevention and minimizing loss and wastage.

On 30 March, Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, the minister and officials went to the site of Bala Min Htin Myitkyina Bridge where they were briefed on progress of work and future tasks by Superintending Engineer U San Nyein.

The minister spoke of work-site safety. The minister and party inspected the site and construction of approach road.

He then inspected extension of roads in Myitkyina and Nantpaung airfield.

(7) Deputy Minister for Industry-l inspects soap factory

YANGON, 31 Mar - Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Col Than Zin, accompanied by directors of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries U Chit Than, U Tin Myint and officials, inspected No 2 Soap Factory on Pandita Street in Hline Township at 3.30 pm today.

Factory. Manager reported the minister on production, finances and welfare for employees.

The deputy minister instructed officials to boost production in 1998-99, to manufacture quality products, to prevent loss and wastage, to take fire prevention and safety measures and to fulfill staff welfare.

(8) Warning to vessels

YANGON, 31 Mar - Log rafts of Myanma Timber Enterprise will float down Twantay Canal and Khanaungto Creek from 3 to 7 April.

Waterways Department today reminded ships to exercise caution in order to be free from danger while navigating through the canal and creek.

Ships and barges being anchored in the creek are also warned to steer are clear of the course of the log rafts.

(9) Winners of the Myat Migin Literary Competition announced

YANGON, 31 Mar - Winners of the Myat Migin Literary Competition organized by Myat Migin Literary Awards Committee with the Minister for Culture as Patron were announced today.

In the short story genre, Nanda Soe (Hsinbyugyun) was first, Lin Wai Lin second, Lu Win (Bawga Beda) third, Ko Koe, Moe Thu Shin, Tha Htat Pe, Ko Ne (Kawlin), Aung Hein (YayU), Khine Kyaw Htwe (Sittway), Maw Maw Lin, Nay Hlyan, Amara (IM-1), Ko Shwe Lay and Zin Min Htet won consolation prizes.

In the novel genre, Win Win Myint (Nandaw Shay) won the award with the manuscript "Chinlonlayyeh Moekaunggin".

The awards presentation ceremony will be held on 25 April. Award winners are to contact the Myat Migin Literary Awards Committee, Khattiya Technology Dissemination Co Ltd at 213, Ahlon Road here, telephone number 228721, not later than 24 April.

(10) Deputy D-G of Basic Education Department leaves for Japan

YANGON, 31 Mar - Deputy Director-General of Basic Education Department U Thaung Shwe left here yesterday to attend coordination meeting on Asian Children's Painting Festival in Japan.

(11) Donations for Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 31 Mar - Eighty-three devotees presented gold plates and nearly K 4.35 million to Shwedagon Pagoda at the 293rd donation ceremony held today at a Tazaung on the pagoda platform.

Members of the Board of Trustees and personnel of religious associations accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Lekkhana delivered a sermon.

The congregation shared the merits, gained.
