(1)   Systematic, more efficient health care being provided according to plan
 
YANGON, 7 Apr - A ceremony to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of World Health Organization was held at the International Business Centre this morning, with an address by  Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present were Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander  Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, members of the Committee, deputy ministers, officials of the  State Peace and Development Council, heads of the departments under the Ministry of Health, ambassadors, resident representatives of WHO and UN agencies, advisers from international organizations, retired persons from WHO, officials of NGOs and guests.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and guests viewed WHO Golden Jubilee Exhibition.

(2)   VIII Student Sports Festival closes in grand blaze of colour and fraternity
 
YANGON, 7 Apr - The closing ceremony of the Vlll Student Sports Festival was held at Vamthu Mong Sports Stadium in Haka Township, Chin State, yesterday evening.

The festival, which was held with the objectives- to help implement the aim of the State "Myanmar  Sports - the World to Conquer"; to turn out more fit and healthy students; to contribute to sporting  movement of the State; to enhance sports standard of the State; to turn out selected, outstanding  athletes; and to further strengthen Union Spirit and patriotism began on 28 March 1998.

Patron of Leading Committee for Holding the Sports Festival Minister for Education U Than Aung  declared the festival close.

Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Win, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Minister for  Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Chairman of the Leading Committee Chairman of Chin State Peace and Development Council Col Ohn Thwin and members, heads of departments, members of  the respective committees and subcommittees, commanders of battalions and units, members of  Sports Federations, Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon, Myanmar Music Asiayon and Myanmar Thabin Asiayon, local authorities, leaders, managers and coaches of student teams from States and Divisions, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, teachers, students, members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire
Brigade guests, local elders and nationalities also present.

(3)   NCEA holds seventh session

YANGON, 7 Apr - The National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) held its Seventh Session this morning at the Conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was chaired by U Ohn Gyaw, Chairman of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) and the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Present at the meeting were members of the Commission and  specially invited guests.

The Chairman of the NCEA addressed the meeting. He said that the meeting was to review the work done by the Commission and to invite views and suggestions from the members of the Commission on the future work of the NCEA. Since its establishment in 1990, the NCEA has made increasing efforts year by year to fulfill its mandates and objectives. Substantial progress has been achieved over the past 8 years, especially in the area of promoting public environmental awareness and international environmental cooperation.

Following the adoption of the National Environment Policy in 1994, the NCEA developed Myanmar Agenda 21 which is the plan of action for sustainable development in the country. He said that programmes and activities outlined in the Myanmar Agenda 21 would serve as basic guidelines for integrating environment and development in Myanmar.

The report of the Commission was presented by the Secretary of NCEA U Kyaw Tint Swe.  Afterwards, the Commission members discussed on the future programme and activities of the  NCEA. The meeting concluded in the afternoon with the closing statement by Minister U Ohn Gyaw.

(4)   Myanmar Thai hold discussions

YANGON, 7 Apr - Discussions on friendly relations and cooperation promotion between  Myanmar Thailand were held at the annex of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 2 pm today.

It was attended by Thai delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Sukhumbhand Paribatra and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe and officials.

The visiting deputy minister called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw at the office of the ministry at 4 pm today.

U Nyunt Swe hosted dinner in honour of visiting Thailand Deputy Foreign Minister and party at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel in the evening.

(5)   Myanmar Selected athletes demonstrate sport events in Haka
 
YANGON, 7 Apr - Myanmar Selected athletes demonstrated weightlifting, sepak takraw and badminton to local people and athletes to the VIII Student Sports Festival at a gymnasium in Haka Township, Chin State, yesterday morning.

Myanmar selected weightlifting team, Myanmar selected women's sepak takraw team and Myanmar selected men's badminton team took part in the demonstration sponsored by Ministry of Sports.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Win, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Chairman of Myanma Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Chairman of Chin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Military Region Control Command Col Ohn
Thwin, OSD at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Director-General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win and officials were also present.

Col Sein Win presented sports equipment for Chin State to Secretary of Chin State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Htut.

He also presented gifts to the Myanmar selected athletes.

The Ministry of Sports under the aegis of the minister and his wife presented
K 15,000 to offer a  day's soon to 60 members of the Sangha who are sitting
for Pahtamabyan examinations in Haka.

(6)   Department of Meteorology and Hydrology urged to better serve nation, people

YANGON, 7 Apr - A meeting to review work done in 1997-98 and coordinate programmes for 1998-99 of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology began at its Head Office this morning attended by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin.

Also present were Director-General U Htay Aung and officials of the department.

(7)   German Parliamentarians call on Minister for Health

YANGON, 7 Apr - German Parliamentarians Mr Dietrich Mohlo and Mr Eckart called on  Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein at his office at 3 pm today.

Present also were Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo and officials of the ministry.

(8)   MIC Secretary receives CNN's Mintier

YANGON, 7 Apr - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office  Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received Bureau Chief of  Cabel News International Inc. (CNN) Mr Tom Mintier and party of Thailand at his office at 11 am  today.

Present also were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(9)   Thai Deputy Foreign Minister arrives

YANGON, 7 Apr - At the invitation of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, a  Thai delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister of Thailand Mr Sukhumbhand Paribatra arrived  here by air this morning.

They were welcomed on arrival at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Foreign  Affairs U Nyunt Swe, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand Ambassador to  Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak and staff.

(10)  Minister for H & T receives Chairman of United International

YANGON, 7 Apr - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Chairman  of United International Limited Mr Tay Choon Hye at his office at 11 am today.

Present also were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director U Kyi Tun and officials.

They discussed diplomatic shop, duty free shop and hotel construction for Innlay region.

(11)  Minister for Industry-1 receives Sales Director of Fritz Werner Industries Ausrutungen

YANGON, 7 Apr - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Sales Director of Fritz Werner Industries Ausrutungen GmbH of German Mr Christ together with officials at his office at 3 pm today.

Present also were Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Col Than Zin, directors-general and managing directors of departments and industries of the ministry.

YANGON, 7 Apr - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Managing Director Mr Toshio Yoneda of Hopeson Myanmar Ltd at his office at 10 am today.

Present also were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director U Kyi Tun and officials.
 

They discussed Yangon Commercial Tower of No 73/75 on Sule Pagoda Road to be open in coming May.
