(1) Bahtoo Station area development and Zawgyi Hydel Power projects gaining momentum

YANGON, 30 March - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Cornrnander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected development of Bahtoo Station area and Zawgyi Hydel Power Project yesterday and today.

Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Agriculture Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, officials of State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental personnel, the General left here by air for Heho in Shan State South at 8.20 am yesterday.

On arrival at Heho Airport, the General and party were welcomed by Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen Maung Bo, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials.

They helicoptered to Bahtoo Tatmyo in Yaksauk Township and were welcomed by Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Commander of Bahtoo Station Commandant of Defence Services Army Combat Training School Brig-Gen Moe Hein, Commandant of Officers Training School Brig-Gen Aung Kyi and officials.

The General and party inspected progress in implementing development projects at OTS and No 1 Non-Commissioned Officers Training School.

Officials briefed them on condition of the projects.

They attended to the heeds in implementing development projects at the Combat Training School.

At No 4 Military Hospital (100 bed), they visited patients and families of the hospital.

Commandant Maj Sein Htay explained to them salient points of the hospital.

On arrival at Zawgyi Hydel Power Project near Indaw village, 28 miles north of Yaksauk, they were welcomed by Col Tint Swe of Kalaw Station and officials.

The project is being implemented by Myanma Electric Power Enterprise.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin briefed them on functions of Zawgyi Dam which was commissioned in May 1997 and Director U Kyaw San Win of Irrigation Department on points of the project.

General Maung Aye looked into their requirements and observed the main concrete dam and intake structure.

Managing Director U Zaw Win of MEPE also briefed them on progress in implementing the hydel power project and its estimated completion time.

Ministers Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, U Khin Maung Thein and Maj-Gen Tin Htut also joined in the discussions.

Harnessing the water flowed out for irrigation and surplus water during the rainy season the two six megawatt turbines will generate 30 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

(2) Secretary-1 looks into construction projects in Mandalay Division, inspects preservation of cultural heritage in Bagan-NyaungU

YANGON, 30 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party left Kalay by Tatmadaw flight yesterday morning and arrived Mandalay at 8.30 am.

They were welcomed at the airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mayor of Mandalay Col Sein Win Aung, military and civilian officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Family members.

They proceeded to the construction site of the upgraded Police Training Institute at Zeebingyi Village in PyinOoLwin Township. They were greeted by Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Tin Soe, heads of departments and officials, members of PyinOoLwin District/Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental personnel.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint briefed them on construction project of the institute, that of the Upper Myanmar Central Institute of Civil Service and that of Central Fire Service Training School.

(3) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 30 Mar - The National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at its meeting hall this afternoon.

Present were Chairman of the Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and commission members.

Maj-Gen Saw Lwin spoke on the occasion.

Officials of the National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters related to the National Convention.

Members of the Commission took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

(4) Minister for Information inspects construction of new MMPE buildings

YANGON, 30 Mar - Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung today inspected construction of new buildings for Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise (Feature Films) and MMPE Office on Shwetaunggya Road in Bahan Township.

The minister, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Managing Director of MMPE U Tin Pe and Managing Director of News and periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, arrived at MMPE (Feature Films) at 10.25 am.

The minister toured Studios No 1 and No 2, colour film developing section and storage section. He told staff to carry out jobs in a business-like manner in accordance with market economic system.

He then inspected the construction site of the new MMPE building.

Engineer in-charge U Khin Maung Soe reported to him on the project.

(5) Minister oversees construction of buildings for factories

YANGON, 30 Mar - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, together with officials, visited construction site of the building for the bulb and fluorescent lamp factory of Myanma Heavy Industries in the industrial zone of Dagon Myothit (South) this afternoon.

They were welcomed there by Managing Director of Myanma Technical Services U Ye Tun, directors and service personnel.

Project Director of MTS U Win Myint reported progress of work in construction of the buildings for the bulb and fluorescent lamp factory and dry cell battery factory and construction of Myanmar Daewoo electronic goods factory, financial condition and arrangement, to be carried out.

U Ye Tun gave a supplementary report.

The minister gave instructions on timely completion of construction work, availability of power and making arrangements to shift the bulb and fluorescent factory.

Later, the minister and party inspected progress of work in shifting the dry cell battery factory.

Manager of No 1 Industry U Min Swe and officials of the dry cell battery factory reported on moving the factory.

The minister gave instructions on arrangements for keeping machinery in three buildings and using a building as a warehouse.

Then, the minister and party inspected construction of Myanmar Daewoo electronic goods factory jointly undertaken by Myanma Heavy Industries and Daewoo Electronic Company Limited.

(6) VIII Student Sports Festival results

YANGON, 30 Mar - Inter State/Division basic education school sports events of the VIII Student Sports Festival began yesterday at various venues in Haka, Chin State.

Soccer

In men's event, Mon State beat Kayah 9-1 and Chin State beat Rakhine State 1-0.

Badminton

In girl's individual semifinal, Khaing Nyein Win of Mandalay beat Zarchi Hnin of Shan 2-0 and Khin Thanda Htay of Yangon beat Mi Mi San of Chin 2-0.

In boy's individual matches Khaing Kyaw Soe of Mandalay beat Myat Htut of Yangon 24 and Pyi Sone Tun of Mandalay beat Zin Lat of Bago 2-0.

In girl's doubles, Mandalay beat Chin and Chin beat Mandalay.

In boy's doubles, Mandalay beat Yangon.

Table Tennis

In men's team matches, Taninthayi, Yangon, Kayin, Ayeyawady, Shan, Chin and Mon were winners.

In women's team matches, Shan, Mandalay, Yangon, Chin, Bago, Magway, Kachin, Ayeyawady and Sagaing were winners.

Volleyball

In men's matches, Yangon, Bago, Mandalay and Chin were winners.

In women's matches, Yangon, Magway, Mandalay and Taninthayi were winners.

Basketball

The winners are Shan, Ayeyawady, Yangon and Chin in men's event.

In men's team matches, Chin, Yangon, Kachin and Mandalay are winners.

Ayeyawady gained 429 points, Bago 214 points, Taninthayi 249 points, Mon 65 points and Mandalay 601 points.

In freehand event, Chin was first, Yangon second and Kachin third.

In women's individual Kata, Yin Hwa Taungloi of Chin was first, Zin Zin Nwe of Mandalay second and Khin Thiri Tin of Yangon third.

In men's individual Kata, Wan Ko Ko Oo of Mandalay was first, Zaw Myo Min of Yangon second and Aung Ko Ko Lat of Yangon third.

In women's team Kata, Chin was first, Mandalay second and Yangon third.

In men's team Kata, Mandalay was first, Chin second and Yangon third.

In women's Kumite 48 kilos and below event, Than Than Lwin of Kayah was first, Pon Zang Til of Chin second and Nwe Ni Win of Ayeyawady third.

In women's Kumite 53 kilos and below event, Zin Zin Nwe of Mandalay was first, Khaing Khaing Win second and Yin Hwa Taungloi of Chin and Htet Htet Aung of Mandalay third.

Sepak Takraw

Chin was first, Sagaing second and Yangon and Mon third. Yan Naing Win of Mon won the Best Player Award.

(7) Tatmadaw computer quiz continues

YANGON, 30 Mar - The Tatmadaw computer quiz continued at the Twelve Objectives section at Defence Services Museum today.

Altogether 75 members of Dawbon, North Okkalapa and Latha Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations participated in the quiz.

Secretary of Work Committee for Display of the Twelve Objectives Showman Lt-Col Win Maung explained about the objects and history of the Tatmadaw before the quiz.

(8) Minister receives Chairman of Myanmar-Daewoo Ltd

YANGON, 30 Mar - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha received Chairman of Myanmar-Daewoo Ltd Mr Gil Yong Um at his office this morning.

Present also were Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun and officials.

(9) Officials of Management and Cooperation Agency of Youth Study Headquarters of Japan meet USDA CEC member

YANGON, 30 Mar - A delegation led by Consul Mr A Watanabe and Mr K Motoro of Management and Cooperation Agency of Youth Study Headquarters of Office of the Prime Minister of Japan met CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Headquarters Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe this evening.

Mr Watanabe explained youth affairs in Japan, bilateral youth cooperation, participation in the 1998 South-East Asian Youth Voyage and arrangements for exchange of views.

Present were CEC member Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and EC members, Third Secretary (Education and Culture) Mr Kazuo Motoro of Japanese Embassy and officials of USDA Headquarters.

(10) Maha Thingyan special sale at Nyaungbinlay Plaza 1-10 April

YANGON, 30 Mar - Maha Thingyan Special Market Festival will be opened at GEC Showroom on the second-floor of Nyaungbinlay Plaza from 1 to 10 April.

GEC, cooperative syndicates and private companies will have booths to sell personal and household goods, clothes, foodstuff, cosmetics, furniture, modern clothes, mosquito nets, mattresses, table cloth, leather bags, silverware, jewels, aluminium-ware, electrical appliances and import goods at discount.

(11) Rubberwood, lesser known woods to be used as sleepers

YANGON, 30 Mar - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung inspected chemical reinforcing of rubberwood and other lesser known woods to be used as sleepers near Thanbyuzayat Township on 27 March.

Technicians with the supervision of the minister are trying to improve the durability of these woods which are abundant in Mon State and Tanintharyi Division to reduce the use of hardwood sleepers under rails of Myanma Railways.

Accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Railways U Kyaw Hsan and officials, he met engineers and other staff of MR Division 8.

He urged them to strive for durability of rails, to build rails and bridges in accord with the required standards, to use innovative means applying theory and practice systematically, to ensure safety and convenience of rail passengers and to work in accord with the principles.
