YANGON, 21 Mar - The National Health Committee held its 25th meeting at the Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Road this morning with an address by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Vice-Admiral Tin Aye, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe and officials.

(2) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Aungmye Bodhi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyay Kyaungtaik in Tamway

YANGON, 21 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Aungmye Bodhi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyay Kyaungtaik and Convocation Hall of Dagon University this afternoon. The Secretary-1, accompanied by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay and officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, arrived at the site of Aungmye Bodhi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyay Kyaungtaik in Tamway Galay Ward in Tamway Township.

The Secretary-1 inspected progress of work and Myanmar artistic works at the Kyaungtaik.

The Secretary-1 went to Dagon University where he was welcomed by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, the director-general of Higher Education Department, the Rector of Dagon University and officials of Public Works.

He inspected progress of work in construction of the Convocation Hall and gave instructions.

(3) Title recipient Sri Lankan Sayadaw leaves for home

YANGON, 21 Mar - Dr Bhaddanta Panananda of Padayadhaya Maha Vihara Kyaung in Colombo, Sri Lanka, left here for home this evening.

The Sayadaw received Agga Maha Pandita Title conferred by the State Peace and Development Council.

The Sayadaw was seen off at the airport by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Ambassador of Sri Lanka Mr K B Fernando and officials.

The Sayadaw was accompanied by two members of the Sangha and two laymen.

(4) Secretary-2 inspects Mingaladon Garden City Project

YANGON, 21 Mar - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected Mingaladon Garden City Project being implemented by Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development and Zaygabar Co Ltd this morning.

The Secretary-2, accompanied by Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials of Office of the State Peace and Development Council and departmental officials, arrived at the project site.

Director-General of DHSHD U Arnt Kyaw and Chairman of Zaykabar Co Ltd U Khin Shwe on whom an honorary Ph.D. in Business Administration was conferred by Washington University last month, reported on implementation of the project and progress of work.

U Khin Shwe presented K 10 million for 157 farmers of North Okkalapa Township through Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Khin.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Deputy Minister U Kyaw Aye discussed the project. The farmers thanked and the Secretary-2 then gave instructions.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected progress of work of single unit houses of the project, construction of Royal Mingaladon Golf and Country Club and scale models of the project.

He also inspected construction of factories and Waste Water Treatment Plant and production services in Mingaladon Industrial Zone.

(5) Thallawady-4 double-decker starts service on Chindwin River

YANGON, 21 Mar - Thallawady-4 shallow draught double-decker started her maiden voyage on the Chindwin River this morning hailing the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

An inauguration ceremony to mark the start of her voyage was held in Monywa, Sagaing Division.

It was attended by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, local authorities, departmental officials, USDA members of Monywa District and local people.

Speaking on the occasion, Brig-Gen Soe Win said Chindwin River plays a vital role in transport sector of Sagaing Division, Chin State and Naga hill region and people living along the river between Hkamti and Monywa rely on river transport.

Rice, edible oil, foodstuff and personal goods required for townships upstream arc being carried by Inland Water Transport boats, he said. He thanked the Ministry of Transport on behalf of the local people for building of new modern double-deckers for the transport of the region.

Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint also said the ministry signed an agreement with Yunnan Machinery Export and Import Corporation of the People's Republic of China to import and locally build new ships.

Six shallow draught type double-deckers including the present Thallawady-4 are included in the ships to be built and imported under the agreement, and Thallawady-1, Thallawady-2 and Thallawady-3 are now in service.

Two double-deckers - Thallawady-1 and Thallawady-2- were built in PRC and the remaining four at Myanma Shipyards (Hsinmalaik), he added.

The commander and officials then inspected the boat, 37.4 metres long and 8.5 metres wide.

With a draught of 1.2 metres, it can carry 250 passengers and 60 metric tons of cargo and will run on Monywa-Homalin route.

(6) Tatmadaw families donate rice, edible oil, gram to Muslim Home for the Aged in Thingangyun

YANGON 21 Mar - A ceremony to donate rice, edible oil and gram to Muslim Home for the Aged on Migyaungkan Ward 2 in Thingangyun Township by the families of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) was held at the home this morning.

Present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental officials and well-wishers.

On behalf of all well-wishers, Commandant of the Defence Services Camp Commandant Office Col Hla Aung Thein, Captain Naval Staff Capt Kyi Min, Chief Technical Staff Officer (Air) Col Hlaing Bwa and Chairman of Myanmar Edible Oil Dealers Association U Than Oo presented the donations to Chairman of the Home Executive Committee U Ba Cho and Secretary Haji U Hla Wai.

YCDC, Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Yangon East District and Township Peace and Development Councils and KN Company also donated five bags of rice each, Township Union Solidarity and Development Association one bag of rice, residents of Migyaungkan Ward 2 three bags of rice, the Board of Trustees of Kyaikkasan Pagoda one bag of gram, Myanmar-Muslim National Affairs Organization three bags of rice, Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association two bags of rice and the Board of Trustees of Yanmyoaung Pagoda two bags of rice.

The cash donations for the home included K 100,000 by Naing Group Construction Co, K50,000 by Haji U Kyaw Aye of KY Construction Co, K 50,000 by Haji U Thein Maung of Kyaw Construction Co, K 21,000 by Township Peace and Development Council and K 20,000 by Haji U Soe Naing of Miba Myitta Construction Co, among others.

Capt Kyi Min, Director-General of Department of Religious Affairs U Arnt Maung and Col Thaik Tun spoke.

(7) Ministry of Commerce's 1997-98 export income exceeds target

YANGON, 21 Mar - A ceremony to honour those who strove for exceeding the export income target of the Ministry of Commerce in 1997-98 financial year and assign duties for export income target for 1998-99 financial year was held at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel this evening.

It was attended by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe Ministers at the Office of the Prime Ministers Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, the Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Commerce, advisers and departmental heads of the Ministry of Commerce, officials and guests.

(8) Purchase of paddy and beans inspected in Thayawady and Letpadan Townships

YANGON, 21 Mar - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Minister Col Kyaw Shwe, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Saw Aung and officials arrived at Alegon Warehouse in Thayawady Township this morning.

Officials reported on purchase of paddy and beans and summer paddy.

The minister and party went to the site of 250-ton rice mill in Lepadan where Bago Division Manager U Tin Shwe of MAPT reported on purchase of paddy and peas and summer paddy and the minister inspected the mill under construction.

The minister spoke of completion of the mill in time, minimizing loss and wastage, planting of shade trees and growing of vegetables.

On his way to Yangon, the minister inspected plantation of summer paddy in Kungyangon Village in Taikkyi Township and discussed cultivation of summer paddy, estimated paddy yield and purchase.

(9) Minister attends to requirements of industrial development

YANGON, 21 Mar - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by officials, arrived at Panhline Sluice Gate in Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division, yesterday, and inspected condition of irrigating farmland to the north of Nyaungdonkyun from Panhline River.

Next, he met industrialists of Hinthada Industrial Zone in the City Hall of Hinthada.

Present were chairman and members of Hinthada District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and officials of Hinthada District and Township Departments under the ministry.

Member of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin spoke on the occasion.

The industrialists discussed manufacturing of farming equipment, production of briquette and financial and mechanical assistance for manufacturing farming equipment.

Director-General of Agricultural Mechanization Department U Win Maw explained about manufacturing of farming equipment and financial assistance, and Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Service U Tun Than about five reforms in agricultural sectors and objectives of the use of agricultural equipment.

Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin spoke of arrangements to enable workers to attend courses at factories and plants of the. ministry and assistance for industrial development.

Later, the minister inspected industries in Hinthada, and summer paddy fields near Duya Village, Hinthada Township.
