(1) Ministries, departments urged to be well prepared to effectively implement aims of ASEAN Vision 2020

YANGON, 19 Mar - The Workshop on ASEAN was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of the ASEAN Steering Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, deputy ministers, Supreme Court justices, the Deputy Attorney-General, the Deputy Auditor-General, the Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor, departmental heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departments and enterprises and officials of NGOs and economic organizations, and guests.

(2) Minister inspects drilling rig in Yedagon Offshore Gas Field

YANGON, 19 Mar - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi arrived at Dawei, Taninthayi Division, yesterday morning.

He was accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Aung and officials.

Col Kyaw Hsan of Coastal Region Command and officials welcomed them there.

The minister and party then helicoptered to derrick barge 27 in Yedagon Offshore Natural Gas Field being jointly operated on mutual basis by Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise and foreign companies-Britain's Premier Petroleum Myanmar Ltd, Malaysia's Petronas, Japan's Nippon Oil Co and Thailand's Petroleum Authority Thailand.

They were briefed on functions of Derrick Barge 27 by President Mr Ronald L Morris of PPM and on arrangement for laying of the drilling rig for Yedagon Offshore Gas Field by Engineer Mr Milton T Bruce.

The minister then inspected laying of the drilling rig, which was assembled on Batem Island, Indonesia.

It is scheduled to complete the placing of the drilling rig by the end of March and installation of the equipment on the rig in the second week of April.

On completion, the rig can drill 20 natural gas wells. The drilling of the first eight of them will commence in the second week of April, and it is targeted to complete the drilling of other wells in May 1999.

About 2 million cu ft of natural gas to be obtained from the gas wells will be sold to Thailand through pipeline beginning February 2000.

(3) Eight repaved streets put back into service in Hlinethaya and Shwepyitha

YANGON, 19 Mar - As a gesture hailing the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day, repaved Ganggaw, Sagaing, Myopat, Shwe, Shwe Phone Shein, Padamya, Ayeyawady Circle Section 2 and Moe Hein Streets were commissioned into service with ceremonies held at respective places in Hlinethaya and Shwepyitha Townships this morning.

The roads were repaved by Engineering Department (Roads and Bridges) of Yangon City Development Committee.

It was attended by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung and committee members, heads of departments, departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Associations, Auxiliary Fire Bridge and Red Cross Society, teachers and pupils and residents.

At the auspicious time, Chairman of Hlinethaya Township Peace and Development Council U Shein Min and District Senior Engineer U Tin Ngwe formally opened the Ganggaw Street, two-lane and 3,800 feet long and Township Development Officer U Khin Maung Nyunt and District Senior Engineer U Tin Ngwe formally opened the Sagaing Street, which is two-lane and 4,400 feet-long in Hlinethaya.

Then, Mayor U Ko Lay and party inspected the streets and cordially greeted the residents.

Similarly, Chairman of Shwepyitha Township Peace and Development Council U Win, Township Development Officer U Khin Zaw and District Senior Engineer U Thaung Nyunt formally opened Shwe, Shwe Phone Shein, Padamya, Ayeyawady Circle Section 1 and Moe Hein Streets in Shwepyitha.

The two-lane streets, as Myopart street is 5,050-feet long, Shwe 2,850 feet-long, Shwe Phone Shein 3,450 feet long, Padamya, 1,400 feet long, Ayeyawady Circle Section 2, 5,900 feet long and Moe Hein, 2,350 feet long.

Then, Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and party inspected the streets and cordially greeted the residents.

(4) ES4E Language & Training Centre opens

YANGON, 19 Mar - ES4E Language and Training Centre opened at 110, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Township, on 14 March morning, attended by heads of departments, ambassadors and guests.

Executive Director Dr Ye Htut of the centre briefed the guests on the aims, functions and courses.

Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Chairman Mr Michael Chia of ES4E (Singapore) and Dr Ye Htut formally opened it.

The centre presented K 30,000 each to Mary Chapman School for the Deaf, Kyaikwaing Youth Training School, Women's Training School, Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled and Hninzigon Home for the Aged.

ES4E has two sectors, which are, education and language courses and technical and vocational courses.

Training fees will be reduced to 50 percent to mark the opening of the centre.

(5) Minister for A & I receives Director of International Relations of Israel

YANGON, 19 Mar - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin receives Director of International Relations of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel Mr Raphael Goren together with Ambassador of Israel Mr Gad Nathan at his office at 2 pm today.

Present also were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises of the ministry.

(6) Minister oversees MHI Factory No 1

YANGON, 19 Mar - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected Factory No 1 of Myanma Heavy Industries this afternoon.

Accompanied by officials, the minister arrived at the factory on Inya Lake Hotel Street in Mayangon Township where he was welcomed by Factory Manager U Min Swe and officials.

He oversaw assembling of buses and TE 21 Hino trucks there.

U Min Swe briefed the minister on progress of work and arrangement for seeking parts of machines.

The minister gave instructions on test-production of bus and raw materials for assembling of the trucks.

He then proceeded to the electrical appliance factory and inspected reproduction of transistor radios there.

(7) Building of Anawrahta Bridge on Ayeyawady River in progress

YANGON, 19 Mar - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint supervised work at Bagan Archaeological Museum Construction Project in Bagan on 16 March.

Accompanied by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw and officials, he inspected ceiling decorating, interior decorating and laying of concrete on entrance road to the museum.

They looked into the requirements in building Anawrahta Bridge on Ayeyawady River in Chauk Township.

Project Manager U Soe Han briefed them on progress in building approach roads, piers, the main structure and spans.

Together with Commander of No 101 LID Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, they visited Mone Creek Bridge Project in Pwintphyu Township, Magway Division, and oversaw piling, earthworks, use of heavy equipment and installation of frames.

(8) Han Golf Masters Junior Tournament '98, 7-8 April

YANGON, 19 Mar - Han Golf Masters Junior Tournament '98, co-sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation and Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd, will be held at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon at 7 am on 7 and 8 April.

There will be under-12 division, 13-15 division and 16-18 division.

Any new generation golfer may enlist for K 500 at Han Golf Masters Pro-shop of Yangon City Golf Course not later than 5 April. Details may be obtained by dialing 641 341.

(9) City Golf Club to hold Junior Golf Tournament

YANGON, 19 Mar - Ngwe Thawda Golf Resort of Yangon City Development Committee will hold Junior Golf Tournament en 11 April, Saturday.

There will be under-10 division, 11-12 division and 13-15 division.

Those desirous of taking part may enlist furnishing birth certificate at the enquiry department of City Golf Resort, not later than 8 April.

(10) K 1 million for Basic Education Department

YANGON, 19 Mar - Soe & Brothers Co Ltd at No 27, 49 street donated K 1 million for Basic Education Primary Schools of Basic Education Department under the Ministry of Education at the Minister's Office this afternoon.

Minister for Education U Than Aung accepted the donations and presented certificate of honour.

Present also were Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt and officials.

(11) NPED booth inspected

YANGON, 19 Mar - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, accompanied by officials of the ministry, inspected booth of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development at 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition in the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road.

Officials of departments concerned under the ministry briefed the minister on arrangements for the booth.

Minister U Soe Tha gave instructions to the officials.
