(1) Extensive programme envisaged for development of Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 18 Mar - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye addressed a coordination meeting on development of Taninthayi Division at the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) at 3 pm today.

The meeting was also attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and the directors-general and managing directors of the departments and enterprises concerned.

(2) Safeguarding of religious, cultural heritage in Rakhine State getting necessary inputs

YANGON, 18 Mar - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected regional development tasks in Rakhine State on 17 and 18 March.

Accompanied by the commander of Western Command, ministers and officials, the

Secretary-1 arrived Rathedaung from Buthidaung at 9 am on 17 March and was welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Aung Naing Tun, local authorities, departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and local people.

They attended a ceremony to share merits gained for donation of Aungmyaybawdi Sasana Yeiktha Alodawpyi Kyaung there.

Alodawpyi Sayadaw Maha Gandavacaka Pandita Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Ariyabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

The Secretary-1 and party presented offertories to Sayadaws.

(3) Yangon International Airport reception hall will soon be ready

YANGON, 18 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace an Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, arrived at construction site of the reception hall at Yangon International Airport at 5 pm today.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the construction site. Officials of the Public Works conducted him around the site.

(4) Thanmyanthu presents cash assistance to in-service Tatmadawmen who sacrificed limbs for national cause

YANGON, 18 Mar - Thanmyanthu Economic Organization presented cash assistance to in-service Tatmadawmen who sacrificed their limbs while discharging national defence duties for the 22nd time today at the City Hall.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo said assistance has been provided to 1,510 in-service Tatmadaw who sacrificed their limbs for national cause, thanking Thanmyanthu Economic Organization for holding cash provision ceremonies for the disabled Tatmadawmen every month and the public for their participation.

The Tatmadaw born together the independence struggle has been discharging national defence and security duties unhesitatingly till today, sacrificing many life and limbs, he stated.

The disabled Tatmadawmen are still discharging duties from the sector they can participate, he said.

The Tatmadaw is offering vocational courses for the disabled Tatmadawmen to earn their living without facing any difficulties in the future, promoting them to higher ranks in accord with the principles and making arrangements for them to gain benefits, he noted.

Every year, dry rations are presented to monasteries and homes for the aged in dedication to the fallen Tatmadawmen and merits gained are shared, he said.

As the Tatmadaw is providing every assistance for these disabled soldiers, the public is also taking part in the task with immense generosity, indicating the perpetual unity, goodwill and love between the Tatmadaw and the people toward building the nation's modem armed forces, he pointed out, urging military personnel to value the cetena and metta of the people.

The Secretary-2 said as the Tatmadawmen are dutifully discharging national defence and nation-building tasks, the public can now take part in industrial, trade, export and agricultural businesses with added momentum and with peace of mind in the economic front, speaking of the need for them to participate in the national economic endeavours.

The Directorate of Resettlement has bought shares for 177 disabled Tatmadawmen at Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited to provide long-term assistance for them and rendering assistance to another 1,340.

The disabled Tatmadawmen and the donors should strive to participate with might and main from the. respective sectors in national peace and development endeavours, he stressed.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint also gave a speech.

Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun and Staff Officer (Grade-1) of the Directorate of Resettlement Lt-Col Win Maung then spoke.

The Secretary-2, the Secretary-3, ministers and deputy ministers presented account books to the disabled Tatmadawmen.

Myanma Oil Products Trading presented cash assistance to 50 disabled War Veterans in Yangon Division through their representatives.

Thanmyanthu Economic Organization presented cash to Mary Chapman School for the Deaf, Insein Khawegyan School for the Blind, Kyimyindine School for the Blind and Kyaikwaing School for the Disabled.

Agga Maha Sirisuddhamma Singi Daw Hse of Ngwe Hse Company, Mandalay, presented shirts and longyis worth K 45,500 and K 65,000 to the disabled Tatmadawmen, U Khin Maung Than of Network Marketing Ltd K 100,000, U Thein Hla of Sandian & Group K 100,000, Thanmyanthu (Mawlamyine) Bus Line K 50,000, U Zaw Win of Steel Enterprise K 50,000 and six donors K 92,500.

Ministers and deputy ministers accepted the donations.

Thanmyanthu Construction Group drew lucky dips for Tatmadawmen.

(5) Myanmar trounce Laos 3-0 in Tiger Cup qualifier

YANGON, 18 Mar - Myanmar trounced Laos 3-0 in the final match of Group A qualifiers for Tiger Cup 1998 of ASEAN Football Federation at Thuwunna Youth Training Centre Stadium here today.

Among the spectators were Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Yangon Command Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, deputy ministers, Director of Medical Services of Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and officials.

Before kick-off, Tengku Tan Sri Dato Seri Ahmad Rithaudeen, President of AFF, and Col Thaung Htaik, President of Myanmar Football Federation, greeted the players of both teams.

Myanmar scored the opening goal of the match with captain Myo Hlaing Win's penalty kick 26 minutes into the first half,

The home side was awarded the penalty kick by the Vietnamese referee due to a breach of the rules by a Laotian player in the penalty area.

The Laotian player who defended the close range shot of a Myanmar striker with hand was red-carded by the referee.

Ten minutes later, Myanmar's mid-fielder Tun Tun Soe made it 24 through firing a surprise long shot into the top comer of the Laos' net.

The third goal of the home side came out in injury time when Tun Tun Soe slotted the ball into the Laos's net after receiving a short pass from Myo Hlaing Win.

Myo Hlaing Win won the US $ 500 Man of the Match Award, and the US $500 Top Scorer Award of the qualifiers went to Tun Tun Soe.

In spite of losing to Myanmar, Laos, together with Myanmar, qualified for the finals of Tiger Cup 1998 to be held in Indonesia as it is the runner-up of Group A which includes Myanmar, Laos and Brunei.

YANGON, 18 Mar - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha received Director of Foreign Relations Mr Raphael Goren of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel together with Ambassador of Israel Mr Gad Nathan at his office at 1.30 pm today.

Present also were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun and officials.

YANGON, 18 Mar - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint received Managing Director Mr T Nishiraka and party of Japan at his office at 1 pm today.

YANGON, 18 Mar - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein received Chairman Mr Takeichi Uehara and party of Hokugan Co Ltd of Japan at his office at 1 pm today.

(9) Minister for CPT receives foreign business delegations

YANGON, 18 Mar - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Vice-President International Sales Mr William M Hilsmam and party of Inter Digital Communications Corporation of US at his office at 10 am today.

Similarly, the minister received President Miss Jenny Wong of JW International Inc of US at the same venue at 11 am today.

Present also were officials of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications.
