(1) Two leaders, two nations rededicate themselves to work together Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing welcome Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah

YANGON, 9 Mar - At the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohamad Ali leading a goodwill delegation arrived at Yangon International Airport by special flight at 10 am today on an official visit to the Union of Myanmar.

The visiting Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohamad Ali and entourage were welcomed on arrival at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun and wife, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and wife, Ambassador of Myanmar to Malaysia U Saw Tun and wife, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and wife, Heads of Diplomatic Missions and UN Agencies in Yangon and their wives, Ambassador of Malaysia to Myanmar Dato' Abdul Wahab bin Harun and wife, and embassy staff.

Students also welcomed the guests chanting friendship slogans and waving miniature flags of the two countries.

(2) Governments of Myanmar and Malaysia sign agreements

YANGON, 9 Mar - The Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of Malaysia signed agreements at the Pyithu Hluttaw Building at 4.15 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Ministers at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel and Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia U Saw Tun and heads of departments, Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato' Kerk Choo Ting, Secretary-General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohamad, Malaysian Ambassador to Myanmar Dato' Abdul Wahab bin Harun and other high-ranking officials.

First, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of Malaysia on Visa Exemption for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports and exchanged documents.

Next, U Ohn Gyaw and Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi signed the Agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of Malaysia for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income and exchanged the documents.

(3) Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt calls on Dr Mahathir

YANGON, 9 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Khin Win Shwe called on Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and wife Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohamad Ali at Seinle Kantha Guest House at 11.30 am today.

Present together with the Malaysian Prime Minister were Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato' Kerk Choo Ting, Secretary-General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohamad and Malaysian Ambassador to Myanmar Dato' Abdul Wahab bin Harun and wife.

The Secretary-1 was accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and wife, Myanmar .Ambassador to Malaysia U Saw Tun and wife and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(4) President of Lessel Co Ltd calls on Minister for Hotels and Tourism

YANGON, 9 Mar - President Mr Yukinobu Nose of Lessel Co Ltd of Japan called on Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin at his office this morning.

Present also were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Lat and officials.

(5) Tatmadaw columns continue parade drill

YANGON, 9 Mar - Parade columns led by Parade Commander Brig-Gen Lun Maung that will be taking part in the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade continued parade drill at the Resistance Park this morning.

The Practice of the Tatmadawmen from seven columns included taking place at the park and parade agenda.

Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade, Chief of Bureau of Special Operation and Chief of Staff(Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of the Armed Forces Day Parade Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Parade Work Committee Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, inspected the practice at the park.

(6) Minister for Industry-1 inspects Kyangin Cement Plant

YANGON, 9 Mar - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe and officials, inspected Kyangin Cement Plant in Kyangin Township on 7 March.

The minister discussed supply of limestone, production and distribution.

The minister and party went to limestone hill and inspected removal of covering of limestone, extraction, crushing and transport.

The minister inspected loading of bags of cement and unloading of gypsum at the port of the factory.

Yesterday, he inspected quality control division, storage of raw materials, spare parts, installation of machines for small cement plant.

(7) Deputy Minister receives ICRC South Asia Desk in-charge

YANGON, 9 Mar - Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung received In-charge of South Asia Desk Mr Laurent Carboys of ICRC who is currently here to study border areas at his office this afternoon.

Present also were Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Hla Bu and Head of Office U Yan Myo Aung Thein.

(8) Deputy Minister for Commerce receives Chinese business delegation

YANGON, 9 Mar - Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint received Chinese business delegation led by inspector of Bureau of International Trade and Economic Cooperation Mr Wang Zhonghe and party of Aeonian Province at his office this morning.

Present also were Adviser of Border Trade Department U Aung Kyi, Director-General of Trade Department U Khin Maung Oo, Deputy Director-General of Trade Department U Aye Kyaw and officials.

The delegation was accompanied by Economic and Commercial Counsellor of Chinese Embassy Mr Lin Jan.

(9) UNICEF Resident Representative calls on Minister for Education

YANGON, 9 Mar - Resident Representative of UNICEF Dr Juan Aguilar called on Minister for Education U Than Aung at his office this morning.

Present were Deputy Ministers for Education Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Director-General of Higher Education Department U Myo Nyunt and Director-General of Basic Education Department U Bo Win.
