(1) Senior General Than Shwe receives SRV Minister of Industry and delegation

YANGON, 6 Mar - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received Minister of Industry of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Dr Dang Vu Chu and delegation at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9 am today.

Present together with the Senior General were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The visiting Minister and party were accompanied by Ambassador of SRV Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa.

(2) Deputy PMs visit 35th Myanma Gems Emporium

YANGON, 6 Mar - Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun today visited the 35th Myanma Gems Emporium sponsored by Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee at Myanma Gems Emporium Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.

They were welcomed there by Chairman of Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Secretary of the Central Committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and members of the Central Committee.

They inspected sale of jade lots through tender and competitive bidding.

(3) MIC Chairman receives Chairman of Resource Strategies (Asia)

YANGON, 6 Mar - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman Mr A D Melzer and party of Resource Strategies (Asia) Ltd of United Kingdom at his office at 9 am today.

Present also were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

(4) SRV Minister of Industry, delegation tour Hlinethaya Industrial Zone

YANGON, 6 Mar - Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun received visiting industrial delegation of Socialist Republic of Vietnam led by Minister of Industry Dr Dang Vu Chu, currently here at the invitation of Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, at his office this morning.

Present also were Ambassador of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, Managing Director U Than Tun of Myanmar Fritz Warner Co Ltd and officials.

Then, the visiting minister and party called on Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut at his office at 11 am today.

Present were Chief Engineer U Yan Naing of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise and officials.

Next, the visiting minister and party called on Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung at his office.

Present also were Secretary of the Committee Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko and members.

The visiting minister and party visited corrugated iron sheet factory, footwear factory, garment factors d construction site of FMI housing projects in the Hlinethaya Industrial Zone.

(5) Special Refresher Course No 1/98 for IPRD officers concludes

YANGON, 6 Mar - The Special Refresher Course No 1/98 for Officers of the Information and Public Relations Department concluded at the training hall of the News and Periodicals Enterprise on Pansodan Street today with an address by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut, departmental heads of the Ministry of Information, course instructors and departmental officials.

In his address, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung said the purpose of conducting the special refresher course for IPRD officers was to let them know clearly their future tasks.

He thanked the course instructors who are from various field of profession and urged the trainee officers to apply the knowledge acquired at the course.

He spoke of the need of IPRD officers to disseminate news on the State Peace and Development Council's goodwill and endeavours in the interest of the nation and the ways to guard against the external and internal destructionists.

He also pointed out their duty to explain to the people of the regions where newspapers, radio and television cannot reach the government's policies and activities.

The lectures included the methods on production of good, informative wall posters and wall sheets in theory and practice, he said, speaking of their need to extensively produce leaflets and pamphlets in cities and towns as well as in villages.

He also told them to keep security vigil against unscrupulous organizations and subversives and to be careful in disseminating news not to be capitalized by the subversives.

In conclusion, he urged them to try to know, practice and achieve the aim, and strive to make more accomplishments.

Later, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented gifts to the course instructors.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein also presented the first, second and third prizes to the outstanding trainees and certificates to all trainees.

Afterwards, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Brig-Gen Aung Thein and departmental heads inspected the wall posters produced by the trainees.

(6) Off limits for trawlers

YANGON, 6 Mar - The Premier Oil Company is carrying out site survey and environmental survey for pipeline route with the help of mv Teknik Kembara at Yetagun Natural Gas ' Field off Myanmar coast from 26 February to 9 March 1998 and local and foreign fishing trawlers are cautioned to keep off the area as mentioned in the Mariner's Notice during the period.

According to the Mariner's Notice the areas where the surveys arc being carried out are designated as Blocks A, B, C, D and H.

(7) Huxtable leads London-Myanmar Open

YANGON, 6 Mar - London-Myanmar Open golf tournament continued at Bagan Resort Golf Club in Bagan, Mandalay Division, today for the second day.

American Robert Huxtable holds the tournament lead for the second successive day with 135 strokes after he had shot a 68.

Thammanoon Sriroj of Thailand and Carlos Espinosa of Mexico tie at 138 strokes for the second place, and Vivek Bhandari of India is at the third behind them with 139.

The other golfers who are being included in today's top ten are Aaron Meeks of the United States with 140, Jyoti Randhawa of India with 140, Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand with 140, Ed Fryatt of Britain with 141, Zhang Lian-wei of China with 141 and Nozomi Kawahara of Japan with 141.

Seventy-six golfers remained in the tournament after the second day.

Among the spectators were Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Tin Soe, Chairman of London-Myanmar Open Organizing Leading Committee President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and officials.

The tournament continues tomorrow.

(8) Reconstruction of King Bayintnaung's Kambawzathadi Palace discussed in Bago

YANGON, 6 Mar - Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and historians attended a meeting on reconstruction of King Bayintnaung's Kambawzathadi Palace in Bago yesterday.

Also present at the meeting were Secretary of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htein Win, district and township authorities and departmental officials.

After the Deputy Minister's address, officials and construction engineers presented reports on construction of Bamayathana Throne, landscaping, construction of Myaynan Pyatthat, brick walls, preservation and excavation work, followed by a general round of discussions.

(9) Opium, liquid opium seized in Namhkam

YANGON, 6 Mar - A combined team including members of defence services intelligence unit, Namhkam Special Anti-drug Squad and Myanmar Police Force, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of U Aik Wai (a) A Wai, 38, son of U Swei Sai, No 116, Sayaydan Ward, Namhkam Township, at 11 am on 21 February.

The authorities nabbed Kyan Sai, 26, son of U Lauk Kyan of Ward-3, Namphatkar Village, Namhkam Township, together with 37 packets of opium weighing 7.51 kilos, two bottles and one saucepan of liquid opium weighing 29 ticals, raw opium weighing 0.001 kilos and related instruments.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrophic Substances Law in Namhkam Police Station.

(10) Osaka Social Organization donates US $ 5,000 for education

YANGON, 6 Mar - A ceremony to donate US $ 5,000 by Osaka Social Organization, Japan, for educational matters was held at the office of the Ministry of Education this morning.

Mr Misao Hamada of Osaka Social Organization presented US $ 5,000 to Minister for Education U Than Aung who presented certificate of honour to the donor.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Ministers Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and officials and four members of Osaka Social Organization.
