(1) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON 30 Jan - National Convention Convening Commission held a coordination meeting in the hall of the Commission this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and members.

Maj-Gen Saw Lwin delivered an address.

Then, National Convention Convening Work Committee and Management Committee presented matters on the National Convention.

Commission members looked into their requirements.

The meeting ended with Maj-Gen Saw Lwin's remarks.

(2) Ambassador of Thailand calls on Minister for Education

YANGON, 30 Jan - Ambassador of Thailand Mr Poksak Nilubol paid a courtesy call on Minister for Education U Than Aung at his office at 2 pm today.

Present also were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Dr Than Nyunt and officials.

(3) Minister visits No 1 Industry, warehouse

YANGON, 30 Jan - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe accompanied by Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials, visited the clinic of No 1 Industry of Myanma Heavy Industries this morning.

He attended to the requirements of renovation of the clinic.

Then, he inspected production and packaging of bulbs and fluorescent lamps and the electrical appliances warehouse and gave instructions.

Afterwards, the minister and party-went to the warehouse of MHI in North Okkalapa Township.

The minister inspected storage of finished goods and gave instructions.

(4) Immigration & Population Ministry holds coordination meeting

YANGON, 30 Jan - The Ministry of Immigration and Population held a coordination meeting at the office of the ministry at 10 am today.

It was attended by Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Deputy Minister U Maung Aung, Director-General, Deputy Director-General, Directors and advisers.

They discussed future programmes.

(5) MOGE signs production sharing contract for oil with British, Israeli oil companies

YANGON, 30 Jan - Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise today signed a production sharing contract for exploration and production of oil with the consortium of Westborne Oil Limited and A&T Exploration Company Limited of Britain and Capital Investment Development Corporation of Israel.

Under the contract, MOGE and the consortium led by Westborne will jointly undertake exploration and production of oil in RSF-8 Block, Minbu District, Magway Division, on a production sharing basis.

The contract signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Energy this morning was attended by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, heads of departments concerned and officials of the companies led by President of Westborne Oil Ltd Mr Mike Newman.

Brig-Gen Lun Thi spoke on the occasion.

MOGE Managing Director U Kyaw Nyein and Mr Newman also spoke.

Officials then signed the contract.

Afterward, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi handed the permits for exploration and production to officials.

(6) Conducting collection of baseline data on drug addicts in Yangon Division discussed

YANGON, 30 Jan - A meeting on collection of baseline data on drug addicts in Yangon Division was held at the office of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council this morning.

It was attended by Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Ma Tu, Commissioner of Yangon Division General Administration Department U Kan Myint and officials of groups for collection of baseline data on drug addicts from districts.

U Kan Myint spoke on the occasion, explaining about collection of the data.

Project Manager of Treatment and Research Unit for Drug Addicts Dr Ba Thaung explained about drug addicts.

Afterwards, officials concerned gave suggestions on the plan.

A general round of discussions then followed.

(7) MRTV Spoken English Course concludes

YANGON, 30 Jan - Spoken English Course No 2 of Myanmar Radio and Television of the Ministry of Information concluded in Studio A of MRTV this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Director-General of MRTV U Kyi Lwin, directors and officials and guests.

U Kyi Lwin spoke on the occasion.

Daw Hnin Yi, in charge of the course, explained about the English language.

Afterwards, trainees entertained guests with English recitations.

(8) Basic Education High School and Middle School Central Level Computer Arts Contest held

YANGON, 30 Jan - To commemorate the 53rd Anniversary of Armed Forces Day, Basic Education High School and Middle School Central Level Computer Arts Contest was held at the Institute of Computer Science and Technology this morning.

Altogether 32 students of States and Divisions took part in the contest.

Present were Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director-General of the Basic Education Department U Bo Win, Rector of the Institute of Computer Science and Technology Dr Kyaw Thein, Rector of the University of Distance Education U Mehn Than Thaung, members of the committee for organizing the contest and teachers.

The Basic Education High School Central Level Computer Application Skill Contest will be held tomorrow.

(9) Farmers collectively sell paddy in Swa

YANGON, 30 Jan - Altogether 322 farmers from six village-tracts collectively sold 4,308 baskets of paddy at purchase centre of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading at Swa Village-tract in Yedashe Township on 28 January morning.

Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Myint Thein, Township Manager U Aung Maung, Township Information and Public Relations Department Officer U Khin Maung Myint, Head of Purchase Centre U Tin Shein and officials visited Swa, Kongyi, Thagara, Yayni and Yedashe purchase centres and attended to the needs.

Swa depot have so far purchased 38,500 baskets of paddy.

Farmers in Yedashe Township have collectively sold 131,764 baskets of paddy up to 27 January.

(10) Minister for Forestry meets officials

YANGON, 30 Jan - Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone met officials of the departments and enterprises under the ministry at the Forest Department, West Gyogone, Insein Township, this morning.

The minister called on them to strive to meet targets during the last two months of 1997-98 fiscal year and to make preparations for the next fiscal year.

He gave instructions on exceeding the target of earning foreign exchanges collecting full percentage of forest tax to meet the target, striving to accomplish the objectives of projects in 1998-99 fiscal year, export promotion to earn more foreign exchange, minimizing loss and wastage working for staff welfare and cooperation with other ministries.

He also urged all to do their utmost in bringing down commodity prices.

(11) YCDC Chairman inspects construction of City Central Highway

YANGON 30 Jan - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung and officials, inspected City Central Highway which will link the section from Mingyi Road of Insein Township to Bogyoke Street of Lanmadaw Township this morning.

The mayor and party arrived at the construction site of the City Central Highway being built parallel to the railway line starting from Station Road and Mingyi Road in Insein

Township and Ywamakyaung Street in Kamayut Township.

The mayor and party inspected paving and tarring the highway, chipping and sand at the construction site where Head of Department ( Roads and Bridges) U Bo Htay and Head of Department (Central Stores Department) U Zaw Htay and officials conducted them around.

Then, they inspected renovation of the West Gyogone Market and gave suggestions to officials.
