(1) Entrepreneurs making generous contributions for progress of education sector

YANGON, 24 Jan - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the renovated primary schools and new buildings of the primary schools in Mayangon Township this morning.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at No 10 Basic Education Primary School on Gandama Street, No 8 Ward, Mayangon Township, at 9.30 am.

He was welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Commander of No 2 Military Region Col Hsan Hsint, departmental heads, district, township and ward authorities, officials of Basic Education Department, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Headmistress Daw Kyi Kyi Win, teachers, members of PTA and pupils.

Meeting the Headmistress and teachers, the Secretary-1 gave suggestions.

Managing Director of Aspidin Co Ltd U Zaw Myo Naing donated K 100,000 for the school and K 30,000 for teachers' uniforms.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 inspected the building constructed by Aspidin Co Ltd at a cost of K 3.75 million.

The Secretary-1 and party next proceeded to No 1 BEPS on Thallawady Street, No 7 Ward, Mayangon, where they were welcomed by Headmistress Daw Than Tin, teachers, PTA members and pupils.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions to the Headmistress and teachers.

Managing Director of Aspidin Co Ltd U Zaw Myo Naing presented K 100,000 for the school and K 30,000 for teachers' uniforms to the Headmistress.

The Secretary-1 and party later inspected the school.

The new building of No 1 BEPS, Mayangon, was constructed by Aspidin Co Ltd at a cost of K 3.46 million.

The Secretary-1 and party next went to No 23 BEPS, Mayangon, on Aungtheikdi Street, No 3 Ward, and they were welcomed there by Headmaster U Soe Min and teachers, USDA members and pupils.

Director U Win Sein of National Land (Ygn) Co Ltd donated K 100,000 for the school and K 15,000 for teachers' uniforms.

National Land (Ygn) Co Ltd spent over K6.1 million to renovate No 23 BEPS.

Meeting the school heads and teachers at the primary schools, the Secretary-1 said that because of the construction- companies' donations, the schools have got new modern and splendid buildings.

He instructed the teachers to nurture their pupils to be outstanding and observe discipline with all seriousness and uplift their morality.

He noted that with the leadership of the government and due to the construction companies' cooperation and contribution, the primary schools of Yangon Division could be renovated in a short time to acquire characteristics of modern schools and that the tradition of implementing the projects with the leadership of the government and in cooperation with the public is flourishing today.

The nation is achieving economic progress, and as the entrepreneurs have more opportunities to prosper, they are making generous contributions for development of the education sector, he said.

He urged the teachers and parents to work together for durability of the new buildings.

(2) Secretary-1 visits 50th Tipitakadhara Selection Examination at Maha Pasana Cave

YANGON, 24 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this afternoon paid homage to members of the Sangha who are taking the 50th Tipitakadhara Selection Examination at Maha Pasana Cave on Kaba Aye Hill.

He was accompanied by officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council. On arrival at Wizaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin on Kaba Aye Hill at 1.30 pm, they were welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, directors-general of the ministry and officials.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to members of Tipitaka Ovadacariya Sayadaws and members of the Sangha who were taking the examination.

(3) New Yamar Dam in Sagaing Division will irrigate 12,000 acres

YANGON, 24 Jan - Yamar Dam capable of irrigating 12,000 acres in Pale and Yinmabin Townships, Monywa District, Sagaing Division, was inaugurated today.

The storage capacity of the 65-foot dam built on Yamar Creek stretching 10,400 feet is 14,056 acre-feet.

In his address, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo said that as the dam will be irrigating 12,000 acres of crops, it will contribute a great deal to development of the agriculture sector of the region.

(4) Minister attends Soon offering ceremony to members of the Sangha at Zabudipa Kyaungsaung

YANGON, 24 Jan - Soon was offered to members of the Sangha who are taking the 50th Tipitakadhara Selection Examination and supervisor Sayadaws at Zabudipa Kyaungsaung at Kaba Aye at 10.30 am today.

Well-wishers Tawtaik Dhamma Yeiktha Sayadaw (Agga Maha Kammathanacariya) Bhaddanta Dhammasara and lay persons of Shwepyitha Township offered soon to members of the Sangha who are taking the 50th Tipitakadhara Selection Examination and supervisor Sayadaws.

Present were Chairman of 50th Tipitakadhara Selection Examination Board Mawlamyine Wepyan Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Vijarabhivamsa and member Sayadaws, supervisor Sayadaws, Bhaddanta Dhammasara Minister for Religious Affairs' Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U' Arnt Maung and Deputy Director-General Dr Myo Myint, Director of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Maung Maung Lay and officials and lay disciples.

(5) BEHS (Central) Level Extempore Talk Contest in progress

YANGON, 24 Jan - As a gesture hailing the 53rd Anniversary of Armed Forces Day, Basic Education High School and Middle School (Central) Level Extempore Talk Contests were held at the Teachers Training Institute, Yangon, this morning.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint attended the ceremony and presented prizes.

Present also were Chairman of the Management Committee for Observing 53rd Anniversary of Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Acting Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Chairman of the Subcommittee for Organizing University, College, Institute and Basic Education High School Literary and Arts Competitions in commemoration of 53rd Anniversary of Armed Forces Day Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, senior military officers, members of the committee and subcommittee, members of the panel of judges, contestants, observers and guests.

(6) Minister visits prawn breeding stations in Kyauktan

YANGON, 24 Jan - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and officials inspected deep sea and fresh water prawn breeding station jointly undertaken by Fisheries Department and Super Group Ltd in Chaungwa Village in Kyauktan Township this morning.

Chairman of Super Group Ltd U Aik Kauk reported on work of the station and officials of Fisheries Department on future programmes. The minister gave instructions and inspected prawn breeding ponds.

The minister discussed development of fish and meat sector with members of Township Peace and Development Council and departmental personnel at the office of Head of Fisheries Department in Kyauktan Township.

The minister inspected prawn breeding stations in West Ward in Kyauktan.

(7) Secretary-2 attends opening ceremony of Cooperative Fair (Mandalay)

YANGON, 24 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the opening ceremony of Cooperative Fair (Mandalay) this afternoon.

The ceremony at Thirimandala Market in Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay Division, was also attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Soe Win, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin. Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Commander, Brig-Gen Tin Soe, Mayor of Mandalay City Col Sein Win Aung, Senior Tatmadaw officers, departmental officials, members of organizing Committee for Cooperatives Trade Fair (Mandalay) and local residents.

(8) Hanthawady International Airport, Zalattaw Dam Projects inspected

YANGON, 24 Jan - Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe arrived at the office of Bago Hanthawady International Airport Project this morning.

The minister was welcomed by Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung, Project Director Senior Engineer of Public Works U Saw David Tha and officials.

U Win Maung reported on the project. U Saw David Tha also reported on use of machinery, fuel and laterite supply, progress of work and requirements.

The minister fulfilled the requirements and spoke of minimizing loss and wastage.

He called for expediting work for completion of the project in time.

The minister and party went to the site of Zalattaw Dam Project where they were welcomed by Assistant Director U Tin Win and officials.

U Tin Win reported on progress of work. The minister inspected the site.

The Zalattaw Dam with 2,225-foot main dam and 2,300-foot earth dam is 50 feet high. Catchment area is nine square miles. The project started in last November and will be completed by March 1998. The estimated cost for the whole project is K 396.40 million.

(9) Yadana Gas Pipeline completed cent per cent

YANGON, 24 Jan - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi arrived at Kanbauk Airport in Yebyu Township, Taninthayi Division, this morning.

The minister was accompanied by Director-General U Soe Myint of Energy Planning Department, Managing Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise U Kyaw Nyein, General Manager Mr F Rafin of Total Myanmar Exploration and Production Co and officials.

At the airport, they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Min Swe of Coastal Region Command and officials of EPD.

In the office of the Kanbauk Base, U Kyaw Nyein and Mr Rafin briefed the minister on implementation of Yadana Gas Field Project in detail and activities on social, health and education affairs for residents in the project area.

The minister attended to the needs and presented gifts to foreign and local personnel discharging duties in the project.

They then inspected Daminseik landfall area and jetty, Dawei River Bridge, laying of the Yadana Gas Pipeline and building of pipeline station and service track.

After the inspection, the minister and party arrived at Nateindaung Military Camp in Myanmar-Thai border area where they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander of Coastal Region Command Col Khin Maung Myint and officials.

They inspected laying of the gas pipeline near the camp and building of metering station and then arrived back here in the evening.

The laying of the 259-mile section of Yadana Gas Pipeline in the country has been completed cent per cent, and now employees of MOGE and foreign companies are energetically striving for timely completion of the project, providing necessary inspections.

(10) Mayor inspects construction work

YANGON, 24 Jan - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay inspected construction of four-lane City Central Highway, renovation of West Gyogon Market in Insein Township and work-site of Waggi Modern Housing Complex Project Phase 6 this morning.

Mayor U Ko Lay inspected construction of four-lane City Central Highway starting from the corner of Station Road in Insein Township and Mingyi Road.

Head of Engineering Department (Roads and Bridges) U Bo Htay, Head of Vehicles Department U Hnin Swe and officials reported on progress of work.

Then, the mayor and officials inspected renovation of West Gyogon Market on the eastern part of the City Central Highway.

Member of the YCDC U Aung Soe and officials reported on progress of work.

Mayor U Ko Lay proceeded to the office of Kamaryut Township Peace and Development Council.

He was welcomed there by Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials, township authorities, Chairman of Asia Express Construction Company Limited U Maung Maung and officials.

He was briefed on construction of Modern Housing Complex Phase 6.

The mayor attended to the requirements, and called for timely completion of construction work and meeting the set standard.

Later, the mayor and officials inspected construction of Waggi Modern Housing Complex Phase 6 in Wards-6, 7, 8, Kamaryut Township.
