(1) Seminar takes into account Myanmar's current economic, political situation together with region's Government must proceed to implement what is right and proper in national context

YANGON, 22 Jan - The Seminar "An Analysis and Assessment of the Current Economic Situation in Myanmar" co-sponsored by the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence and the Tun Foundation Bank concluded at the Defence Services Guest House on Inya-Road today with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, ministers, deputy ministers, the Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and officers, departmental heads, economists and entrepreneurs, and guests.

After the closing ceremony, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met the participants.

(2) Secretary-1 receives Assistant UN S-G

YANGON, 22 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Assistant UN Secretary-General Mr Alvaro de Soto at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

Present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3) Secretary-1 receives former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand

YANGON, 22 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Dr Thaksin Shinawatra at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4.15 pm today.

Present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(4) Secretary-1 receives Chairman of JETRO

YANGON, 22 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Received Chairman of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Mr Toru Toyoshima and party of Japan at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr Yoichi Yamaguchi.

YANGON, 22 Jan - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman Mr Toru Toyoshima and party of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) at his office at 3 pm today.

Present also were officials of the Commission.

(6) Seminar "An Analysis and Assessment of the Current Economic Situation in Myanmar" concludes

YANGON, 22 Jan - The Seminar "An Analysis and Assessment of the Current Economic Situation in Myanmar" co-sponsored by the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence and the Tun Foundation Bank was held at the Defence Services Guest House on Inya Road for the fifth and final day today.

It was attended by ministers, deputy ministers, officers of the Office of Strategic Studies, departmental heads, economists, scholars, entrepreneurs, faculty members of universities and institutes and guests.

The session was presided over by Chairman of Tun Foundation Bank U Thein Tun.

Chairman of First Private Bank Ltd Dr Sein Maung, Retired Deputy Minister for Planning and Finance U Nyunt Maung, Dr Soe Tint Aung, on behalf of Retired Ambassador U Thet Tun, Rector of Yangon Institute of Economics U Maw Than, Retired Senior UN Official Dr Maung Myint and Managing Director U Hla Myint Thein of Win Trade Co. Ltd, who presented papers on economy, Retired Ambassador and Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs U Hla Maung, who presented the paper on levying of taxes, retired member of the State Council Dr Mehm Thet San and Retired Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Tin Hlaing, who presented papers on agriculture, gave supplementary talks on their papers.

(7) Wanted: more outstanding dental surgeons

YANGON, 22 Jan - Myanmar Dental Surgeons Association held its 18th Conference this morning at Yuzana Hotel with an address by Patron of the association Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Health and fitness of the entire people requisites in endeavoring for national all-round progress, he said, adding national health plans have been laid down for providing health care as the Government is concentrating on uplift of health and education of the entire nation.

Projects are being laid down and implemented with the help of NGOs to conduct effective rural health care, diseases control and primary health care services, he said. Oral health is essential for all-round health, he said, urging the association members to strive to promote oral health standard of the people.

Primary Oral Health Care Project, which covers 27 townships, was initiated in 1991, he said, calling for collective efforts in implementing the project.

The Ministry of Health is implementing the objective, health and longevity for all, he said, speaking of the need to bring out outstanding dental surgeons.

It opened the MDSc course in 1993, bringing out 49 surgeons with masters degrees during the six courses, he noted, adding it has also opened a diploma course on dental medicine.

The ministry has given priority to the development of the better working conditions for dental surgeons, allowing assignment of specialist at different levels, he said.

Plans are under way to open another Institute of Dental Medicine in upper Myanmar in addition to the one in Yangon, he stated, elaborating on the ministry's programmes in sending scholars abroad to gain more experience.

Dental surgeons should be loyal to the State, to work hard for the nation and to bring our new generation dental surgeons, he noted, saying the Government is making all-out efforts for progress of dental medicine.

Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo, directors-general, rectors, the president of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and executives, officials of international agencies, guests and President Prof U BA Myint, executives and members of MDSA were present.

Chairman of Yuzana Company U Htay Myint presented K 100,000 to the association.

The minister accepted it.

He then formally opened booths on dental medicine.

Eighteen papers will be read at the conference which continues till 25 January.

(8) Rail Transportation Minister inspects quarries

YANGON, 22 Jan - Minister for transportation U Pan Aung met staff of Myanma Railways at Toungoo Railway Station on 20 January.

He urged them to make renewed efforts with fresh ideas, to apply innovative means, to tour down to the basic levels in supervising work to assure safety of the lives and property of passengers and freight and to ensure passenger satisfaction.

Accompanied by officials, he inspected a quarry of the Central Command.

He also made arrangements for MR to set up a new quarry.

The minister and party inspected Toungoo-Pyu railroad, Seingyichaung region were prospects are bright to mine rock for railways and a quarry of MR.

In Penwegon, he attended to the needs of Union Solidarity and Development Association in setting up a quarry.

They also looked into the requirements in repairing of a bridge on Penwegon-Yangon Railroad.

(9) Minister for Finance and Revenue receives Ambassador of Australia

YANGON, 22 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Ambassador of Australia Ms LA McLean and party at his office at 4 pm today.

Present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun and Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(10) Isuzu Myanmar Men's and Women's Open Amateur Golf Championships conclude

YANGON, 22 Jan - Isuzu Myanmar Men's and Women's Open Amateur Golf Championships, sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation, concluded on final day and held prize presentation ceremony at Yangon Golf Club of Danyingon this evening.

It was attended by Presented of MGF Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Vice-President U Tha Tun Aung, Secretary-General U Aung Kyi and executives, Resident Representative U Aye Cho of Isuzu Motor Company Ltd and guests.

Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and General Manager Mr lida spoke.

At the final day, Zaw Paing Oo (Finance and Revenue) scored an ace at the l5th hole.

Standing winners of fourth day in the men's final event, Min Naing (Finance and Revenue) won first with 304 strokes, Aung Zaw Moe (YCDC) second with 305 strokes and Zaw Lin (Home Affairs) third with 308 strokes.

Third day, final day, of the women's event, Khin Thu Thu (Forestry) was first, 227 strokes, Aye Aye San (Forestry) second, 231 strokes and Mar Mar (YCDC) third, 248 strokes.

Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Mr lida and officials presented prizes to the winners.

Later, Brig-Gen Win Hlaing accepted K 300,000 for Myanmar Golf Federation donated by General Manager Mr lida of Isuzu Motor Company Ltd.
