(1) Effective use of UN-aided funds stressed

YANGON, 1 Jan - A meeting was held at the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development today to assess the projects which are being implemented with the assistance of UNDP and other UN agencies in Myanmar with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Projects are being implemented in Myanmar with the assistance of UN agencies such as UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, FAO, UNDCP and IAEA, he said.

In cooperation with UN agencies, ministries including Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Ministry of Home Affairs are harmoniously implementing human resources development, health education, agricultural development and drug control programmes in various parts of the nation, he stated.

There would be more tasks expedited if funds provided to the nation were being effectively used, he pointed out, saying successful implementation of a project will lead to coordination for starting another.

Arrangements should be made for the funds to be used effectively for the benefit of all levels, he said, urging high-level officials and project managers to make supervision for the success of the projects.

Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel explained tasks being undertaken with the assistance of UN agencies.

Ministers and officials presented work plans and projects which are being implemented in cooperation with UNICEF, ILO, WHO, FAO, UNDCP, UNFPA, UNHCR and IAEA, and use of funds sector-wise.

The Secretary-l looked into their requirements, urging the project officials at different levels to work speedily, correctly and effectively and to render efficient supervision for the success of the projects.

The meeting was also attended by ministers, deputy ministers, officials and guests.

(2) Leading Committee for Observance of 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day held its third meeting

YANGON, 1 Jan - The Leading Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day held its third meeting at the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were members of the Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Defence Services Inspector-General Brig-Gen Win Myint, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, senior military officers, deputy ministers and departmental officials.

(3) Maubin Bridge to open 10 February

YANGON, 1 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected Maubin Bridge Project in Ayeyawady Division this morning.

Accompanied by officials, he heard a report on completion of pedes train lanes, concrete laying, installation of PC Girders on Yangon Bank, progress in building of approach roads on Yangon and Maubin banks and future programmes presented by engineers.

The minister said heavy equipment have already been provided to the project, stressing the need to strive for timely completion.

Duties have been assigned group-wise, he said.

Engineers and personnel of Public Works are working day and night for opening of the bridge on 10 February 1998.

In the afternoon, they inspected Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project.

Project engineer briefed him on progress in piling, installation of frames and pillars at Kyeinbinhse and completion of the approach structures.

The minister attended to the needs.

(4) MD of Daewoo calls on Minister for Finance and Revenue

YANGON, 1 Jan - Managing Director Mr Tae-Chul Shin and party of Daewoo Corporation of Republic of Korea called on Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein at his office this evening.

Present was Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun.

(5) Minister for Health inspects hospitals in Myitkyina

YANGON, 1 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein visited People's Hospital of Myitkyina on 29 December evening.

The minister was welcomed by Director-General Dr Hla Myint of Health Department, Head of Kachin State Health Department Dr Jozeph, Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Boni Aye Maung, specialists and nurses.

The minister met staff of the hospital and attended to their needs.

He also extended greeting to the patients.

The minister then inspected special care unit, operation theatre and maternity unit and X-ray laboratory and fulfilled requirements.

Health Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein together with Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone arrived at the Rehabilitation Hospital for Drug Addict.

They heard a report on the hospital by Medical Superintendent Dr Kyaw Win.

The ministers inspected the hospital and gave instructions.

(6) Central Organizing Committee for Myanma Trade Fair 98 meets

YANGON, 1 Jan - Central Organizing Committee for Myanma Trade Fair 98 held its meeting at the Ministry of Commerce this morning.

Present were Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, advisers to the Ministry of Commerce, directors-general, managing directors, central committee members and officials of various work committees.

Various work committees presented the progress of work.

The deputy minister looked into the requirements.

Myanma Trade Fair 98 will be held in Yangon Trade Centre, Lower Pazundaung Street, Mingala Taungnyunt, from 27 February to 5 March in 1998.

(7) Golden Jubilee Independence Day Commemorative Sixth Mayor's Cup Horticulture Show and Contest

YANGON, 1 Jan - The opening of the Sixth Mayor's Cup Horticulture Show and Contest took place at No 8 Area Sports Ground, Bahan, this morning, marking the Golden Jubilee Independence Day.

It was organized with the aims at drawing the interest of the public in the tasks for greening and beautifying the city, assisting greening of the city through every house's participation in work for greening the city, exchanging horticulture technology and distributing quality strain of flower, fruits and vegetable.

Patrons of Myanmar Floriculturists Association Dr Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Than Nwe and Daw Khin Cho Oo formally opened it.

It was also attended by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Chairman and Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint Secretary U Kyi Win, committee members, heads of departments under YCDC, heads of foreign missions, executives of MFA, departmental officials and guests.

Chairman of Sixth Mayor's Cup Horticulture Show and Contest Organizing Leading Committee YCDC Joint Secretary U Kyi Win spoke on the occasion.

Afterwards, officials and guests viewed the exhibits at the show.

In the evening, winners in the contest were presented prizes.

Dr Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Than Nwe and Daw Khin Cho Oo Present prizes to the winners in respective events of the show and contest.

The prize distribution ceremony was also attended by the mayor, the vice mayor and YCDC members heads of foreign mission, officials of MFA departmental officials and guests.

Mayor U Ko Lay presented the best award to U Soe Nyunt (Tawwin Hninsi) who thanked.

A total of 513 items of flower, fruit and vegetable are being displayed at the horticulture show and contest which will be open to the public till 15 January.

(8) Minister for Finance and Revenue receives GM of Marubeni

YANGON, 1 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received General Manager Mr M Tkegai and party of Marubeni Corporation of Japan at his office this afternoon.

Present also Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun.
